Finished in Sigma’s signature matt-black coating and with an EX gold ring at the front, this is a good looking lens that exhibits excellent mid-aperture sharpness.

The Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro Lens is - as you can discern from the name - Sigma's entry in the fixed short-telephoto focal length macro lens category. And in this case, Sigma means a true 1:1, close-up macro lens.

It is one of the most popular macro lenses around, and ePHOTOzine's Gary Wolstenhome checks it out Sigma's 105mm macro optic costs around £380, which is the same price as their more recently released 70mm F/2.8.

Good build quality, Easy to switch between manual and auto focus, Smooth manual focus action, Recessed front element reduces need to use supplied hood

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW : This DG-designated lens, which replaces the non-DG version (tested August 1998), is optimized for digital SLRs. Optical improvements include a new 11-element, 10-group design (up from 10 elements in nine groups), to improve correction for lateral chromatic aberration and...

The 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro sits in the middle of Sigma's range of 1:1 true macro lenses. Keenly priced, it is designed for use with full frame digital SLR cameras, but can also be fitted to DSLRs with smaller APS-C size sensors.

Sigma's 105mm Macro offering has an enviable reputation and is a very popular optic as a result. Does it deserve such popularity? Here we take a close look.

If only Sigma decided to equip the 2.8/105 lens with an HSM motor we would have a nearly perfect device. Practically everything, concerning this lens, deserves our praise apart from the work of the autofocus.

  • +

very good picture quality in the middle and at the edge of the field at all apertures,, excellent control of chromatic aberration,, negligible distortion,, very low coma,, slight astigmatism,, good performance against bright light,, sensibly corrected vignetting,, 3-year-long guarantee (on extra...

slow, noisy and averagely accurate autofocus

This is a fine lens and for the price is excellent value for money. Optically it is as good as it gets and manually focussed there is nothing to complain about. But the auto focus issue is baffling. Our test cameras were two Canons – a 7D and a 5D MkII.

  • +

Optically this is an excellent lens with outstanding sharpness, contrast and colour fidelity. Sharpness is consistent across the entire image with no fall-off in the edges and corners and is also consistent at all focus points.

  • -

There is extreme focus hunting with low contrast subjects and even with ordinary contrast the lens can take its time finding a sharp focus. Given the fast aperture (f2.8) this inability to focus quickly is inexplicable.

The Sigma AF 105mm f/2.8 EX DG macro is an excellent lens without any significant optical flaws. The resolution figures are excellent and neither distortions nor CAs nor vignetting is something to worry about.

A good lens made better. The improvement in contrast and extra control of flare and ghosting provided by the DG coating are, in themselves, worth the upgrade. Improvements have also been made to the hood along with a reduction, albeit slight, in the AF noise.

  • +

Very good optical performance throughout the aperture range, Edges as good as centre. (on APS-C sensor), Contrast and aberration control improved from older model, Value for money

  • -

AF still not lightning., Lens cap not useable with hood. (minor niggle)

This is a very sharp and well build lens. Hunts a little on Nikon D200, but works perfect on D300 and D700. Recomended. A little gem on Nikon. No need for upgrade to the newer version. If you don´t need the OS of cource. This one is proberly sharper. (?)

    Sharp. Very sharp. Good colorrending.

Bought this on a lark about two years ago from KEH, had some extra cash and thought it would be fun to try macro photography. I had shot with the Canon 100mm 2.8 USM and the MP-E 65mm ... but I didn't have that kind of extra cash.

  • +

Extremely sharp even when wide open, good build quality, great bokeh, color, contrast, etc.

Autofocus is crap but who uses autofocus on a macro lens?

I love this lens. I bought it used 3 years ago and it was the best investment in a lens that I have made. I use it for 95% of my floral and garden work with great success.

  • +

Terrific macro lens when used with a tripod & manual focus. Killer Bokeh.

  • -

As already noted - a bit slow. Clunky & heavy.

High quality for relatively low price.

  • +

Very sharp, nice contrast, not heavy, easy to use.

  • -

Slow and noisy AF, but I got used to it (somehow, it gives personality to the lens) (-:)
