While its f/5-6.3 aperture is a little more restricted than some other 100-400mm, the Sigma 100-400mm f5-6.3 DG OS C is significantly more affordable. It’s also comparatively light for a lens of this focal length range and this adds to its attraction, as it’s easier to hold and use over long periods...

If you've stayed with me throughout this entire review, you know the final story. The AF accuracy could be slightly improved and a tripod ring would be nice to at least optionally have available, but otherwise, the 100-400 C gives you a very useful range of focal lengths in a relatively small and...

This Sigma 100-400mm offers a good compromise between budget 70-300mm lenses and whopping super-telephoto zooms. It’s well-built, handles nicely and boasts some useful up-market features.

  • +

Small and light for a ‘super-tele’ zoom, Good handling and performance, Reasonably priced

  • -

Only the mounting ring is weather-sealed, Fairly narrow f/5-6.3 aperture rating, No tripod mount ring available

With all eyes currently on Sigma’s amazing Art and Sports ranges, we almost take its Contemporary line-up for granted – but this fresh release’s massive reach and sharp optics swiftly remind us why Sigma is so successful.

The new Sigma 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM telephoto zoom lens offers very good image quality throughout its versatile focal range, whilst being light and compact enough to make it suitable for hand-holding.

I have to say once again Sigma surprised me quite nicely. Despite being a bit slower aperture-wise and, by default, weaker than the new lenses from Canon/Nikon when it comes to apertures and vignetting, it didn’t have any problems to win a resolution duel with them.

  • +

High quality casing,, Excellent image quality in the frame centre no matter what focal length you employ,, Very good image quality on the edge of APS-C sensor,, Good image quality on the edge of full frame,, Lack of problems with spherical aberration,, Slight lateral chromatic aberration,,...

  • -

Distinct vignetting at longer focal lengths on full frame,, A bit too many flares and losses of contrast during the work against bright light,, Minimum focusing distance the worst in this class of equipment,, Slow autofocus.

Bought for my wife to go with her first DSLR. I have to say I am very impressed with this lens. For the money the AF speed, sharpness and image quality pleasantly surprised me. A lot of bang for your buck.

Wildlife, particularly birds. Just overnight a year ago I purchased the Tamron 100-400 as reviews indicated that it was better than the Sigma. I have never been happy with the lens, in particular the sharpness of the image. I decided to bite the bullet and part exchanged it for the Sigma.

Hate to say it, but it feels better than my Canon lenses. The manual focus and zoom are really smooth and precise. Can't wait to get out and use it to its full potential and see if it matches optically as well

Focusing accuracy looks fine so far with my limited use and compares well with my Nikon 70-300mm AP lens (the latter is excellent for small garden birds).I plan to use the Sigma lens for wildlife, mainly birds, at nature reserves where the extra reach justifies the extra weight.

I have taken tens of thousands of shots with my lens, and compact. Reliable, but for best result use S and use 1/1000, and use the OS to keep the viewfinder steady, first and foremost. The zoom is so smooth, it is amazing, especially compared to the PANASONIC-Leica 100-400.

  • +

Light, compact, sharp and works on all my DSLR and ML cameras. Works great with Sigma\'s TCs. Reliable, able to produce stunning shots.

  • -

No tripod foot; not the lightning-fast focus one would wish; easily sucks in dust that ends up in the front of the lens, so not huge a problem, but irritating. Not the best OS.

This lens is honestly an awesome telephoto lens for a very cheap price compared to other telephoto zoom lenses. It is very light and compact so it can fit in your backpack easily. Has some awesome little features such as lens lock etc.
