The affordable, versatile Samyang 85mm T1.5 VDSLR AS IF UMC II lens isn't the best performer at f/1.4, but it shines when stopped down.

  • +

Geared for cinema use. Very sharp when stopped down. Even illumination across frame. Minimal distortion. Available for multiple systems. Affordable.

  • -

A bit soft at f/1.4. Manual focus design is not for everyone. Omits optical stabilization.

Specification This manual focus medium telephoto lens, offers a fast T1.5 maximum aperture for a budget price of around £300. This lens is optimised for those wishing to record video with their DSLR, which is why 'T stops' have been used instead of 'F stops'.

  • +

Incredibly inexpensive, Excellent sharpness, Low distortion and CA, Good build

  • -

No hyperfocal scale or hard focusing stop for infinity, Minimum focus distance of 1m may be a little restrictive, Flimsy hood

If you've ever fancied experimenting with a fast aperture prime telephoto lens before, but have been put off by the cost, this lens could be the answer. With a price that's around the same as hiring the Canon, Nikon or Sony equivalent for a couple of weeks, this lens represents outstanding value for...

I own two C300 cameras that I use mostly for sit down interviews for ABC News, CBS News and some HBO shows. My go-to lens for this has been the Sigma 50-150/2.8, which I find better than my Canon 70-200/2.8 mk2 (which I sold after getting two of the 50-150 Sigmas) but lately this Samyang 85mm (which...

Great lens for the price. Image quality is very good. Out of focus image is nicely softened at T1.5. Focus is nice and smooth, however it does "breathe" a little when doing so.. It is a big lens for a MFT Camera, but Not an issue for me.

I bought it for the Panasonic GH4 6 months ago so didn't want to write a review until I had a good chance to place with it. For the price it's fantastic. I already had the 12mm version so knew what to expect with Samyang lenses - they're completely manual.

Quality lens at an unbeatable price

love this lens, good colour rendition and super sharp. this still is from my Ursa 4.6k plus Samyang.

The build quality and everything is great, but this lens is for an a mount camera. So dont be deceived by its alpha name. I bought it for my sony alpha a6000, but unfortunately it didn't fit and had to return it. So my rating is based on the built quality and packaging of the product.

Hi quality product. A little too complicated for a novice like me.

10 August 2016

This lens is superb - smooth action, decent optics and really nice bokeh. Well worth investing in for indie film makers and those shooting on a budget.

5 July 2016

Great kit for a good price, want them all. Real nice results with a 5DMKIII. Solid build.
