For inconspicuous and quick street shooting or as a travel camera for landscape fans, the Ricoh GR II hits the mark. But If you want video or the shooting-angle flexibility that a movable LCD or viewfinder provides, this may not be the camera for you.

  • +

The lightweight, compact Ricoh GR II is well designed, and its APS-C sensor allows for shallower depth-of-field than do the smaller sensors in competitors. And while it lacks breadth in its features, it does provide depth when it comes to still photos.

  • -

Slow autofocus focus in dim light, poor video quality with zero controls, and a relatively complicated menu system given its features dim its allure.

The Ricoh GR II is a modest update to many a photographer's favorite pocket camera, adding Wi-Fi and a few firmware tweaks.

  • +

Pocket-friendly design. APS-C image sensor. Superb controls. 28mm wide-angle lens. Snap focus capability. Raw capture. 21mm wide-angle adapter available. Excellent Wi-Fi remote control.

  • -

Wi-Fi implementation can use some improvement. No EVF option. Doesn't include external charger.

The Ricoh GR II updates its predecessor with Wi-Fi that works from most any device, a deeper raw buffer and wireless flash support, but keeps everything we loved in its predecessor. Are the tweaks enough to keep this large-sensored yet pocketable camera relevant in 2016?

  • +

Shooting with a wide prime helps you see new shots; Good performance and fast autofocus; Excellent sharp, bright lens; Very customizable; In-camera Wi-Fi works with more than just Android and iOS; Supports Pentax wireless flash strobes

  • -

Fixed, wide prime lens isn't for everyone; Cramped controls; Burst capture is slower for JPEGs; Tends too warm under incandescent lighting; Wi-Fi app is poor, and web browser control has cluttered interface

Combining high-spec features and great image quality into a tiny body makes the GR II a tantalising proposition. For those after a highly portable, take-anywhere camera that’s no more intrusive than a smartphone, it can slip into a pocket but offers cutting-edge features like RAW capture, a full...

Almost a bridge unit, just larger than most small point and shoot offerings, certainly a little heavier, however smaller than all DSLR units, this camera has a surprise that I have only seen recently in one other camera it has a fixed focus lens.

It's hard to get excited about a new camera that principally only adds wi-fi and NFC connectivity to its predecessor. The new Ricoh GR II certainly takes the title of "Smallest Upgrade Ever", with just a handful of other minor new features to justify the full RRP of £599.99 / $799.

The Ricoh GR II may seem like a subtle update to the previous camera, however, the camera offers built in Wi-Fi and NFC, bringing the camera more up to date. Improvements have been made in continuous shooting and the camera feels very rapid in use.

  • +

Smallest camera with an APS-C CMOS sensor, High quality f/2.8 28mm equivalent lens, Pocketable with a compact metal body, Excellent noise performance, Quick performance, DNG raw files, Improved battery life, Wi-Fi / NFC built in

  • -

Does not feature a standardised MicroUSB cable for charging, Some moire visible in images and video, Auto white balance settings leave a strong colour cast, No panoramic mode

I've been a Nikon/Canon/Sony user all my life so buying the Ricoh GR 11 was a little out of my comfort zone. But the reviews, photos and user experiences were generally very enthusiastic. It was especially appealing since most of my work is street photography.

I'm using the camera for over a year now and so far this is my most favorite camera yet. Previously I've shot with Nikon D70, Canon 1D, Olympus OM-D E-M10 and several small point-and-shoot bodies. Two features that stand out most for me are the lens and the user interface.

I used to love to shoot black and white film, develop, and print, taking the time to get everything right, capture the feeling of that moment. But there is no place like Pittsburgh Filmmakers here in Baltimore for me to do these things, and even if there were, work and family now take 99.5% of my...

Excellent pocket camera. Love the images it puts out. Bought it as back up and walk around camera. No regrets. Half the price of Fuji x-100 but equal in image quality in my opinion.

The camera performed well in standard mode, quickly opening the lens and easy to shoot one-handed. When I switched to macro mode, it was almost impossible to get it to focus on the defined area. I searched online and found other reviews that noticed this difficulty is well.

outstanding everyday carry camera. I also use it for wedding receptions during the dancing to save my shutter on my 5d mkiv

I don't have much to add to the reviews here and elsewhere on this camera. Even if the design is a few years old, I still think that this is the best you can get for this money and with this concept in 2017. I have other gear (Pentax K-1 DSLR etc) but this might well become my go-around camera.

This camera is perfect for carrying during your travels. It's super fast, lightweight and great quality. Highly recommend.
