The Pentax K-70 is an affordable SLR with the benefit of weather sealing, but like most of its competitors, its Live View focus system is underwhelming.

  • +

24MP image sensor. Vari-angle display. In-body image stabilization.Pixel Shift Resolution and AA Simulation options. Weather-sealed design. Pentaprism viewfinder. Strong dedicated APS-C lens library.

  • -

Burst shooting rate doesn't match up to specs. Modest Raw shooting buffer. Clunky Wi-Fi app.

While not as refined as the competition, the K-70 doesn't feel crude or cheap as its predecessors. In fact, it offers the most controls and features of the competition, at a considerably lower price.

Ricoh's Pentax brand has made a name for itself by providing enthusiast-grade features at aggressive, entry-level pricing. The Pentax K-70 follows in that tradition and offers an unbelievable amount of camera for very little cash.

  • +

Huge bang for the buck; Great image quality; Excellent high ISO performance; Fast autofocus; Good burst frame rate with deep buffer; Pentaprism viewfinder; Twin control dials; Articulated LCD; Comprehensive weather-sealing and freeze-proofing; Unbelievable wealth of rare to unique (yet very useful)...

  • -

Wi-Fi wireless communication is slow, clumsy and unintuitive; Video autofocus is prone to hunting or racking focus; Slow buffer clearing; Rather heavy for an entry-level DSLR; Autofocus and metering systems are a bit dated; Below average battery life, Warm Auto white balance in tungsten lighting,...

The Pentax K-70 is a welcome, substantial update to both the three-year-old K-50 and the more recent K-S2. Inheriting the bulk of the K-S2’s feature set, it improves on an already great midrange DSLR with smart software tweaks, nifty new features, and a superior 24-megapixel sensor that rivals the...

Class-leading image quality, Class-leading low-light AF, Articulating LCD, 100% coverage optical finder, Weather sealing, All lenses stabilized, Built-in WiFi, Great ergonomics, Compact design, Many customizable controls, Solid build quality, Several features borrowed from K-1, Speedy overall...

Out of date autofocus system, Hybrid AF only works in video, doesn’t work well, Heavy for its size, Small RAW buffer, Poor JPEG compression, Comparatively loud shutter, Poor Live View button placement, Poor battery life, No wireless flash control

I have to admit to having a soft spot for Pentax DSLRs; I’ve used them on and off for almost a decade, and have always found them capable and pleasant to shoot with. But one thing I really don’t understand is their naming convention.

  • +

Effective in-body image stabilisation that works with every lens, Large, bright viewfinder is the best in class, Good contingent of external controls makes it easy to change settings

  • -

Relatively slow and clunky live view, In-camera JPEG processing needs a lot of twekaing for the best results, LCD screen isn't touch sensitive

If like me you enjoy a good manual then this unit should make you happy. The manual I saw was in PDF format – sadly not something to read in the bath – and it is 156 pages with 144 pages before the safety and warranty pages, bliss.

The Pentax K-70 is outwardly a minor refresh of 2013's K-50 DSLR camera, offering a very similar control layout with a better, deeper grip and new thumb-rest. Inside, though, are a lot of improvements inherited from the more expensive K-3 II and flagship K-1 cameras, including the innovative Pixel...

Very pleased with this camera. I got it because my old K3 was not compatible with the newest Pentax 55-300 PLM lens like the K70 is. I am happy with how nice the JPEGs are, low light performance, good low light autofocus, best color balance I have seen on a Pentax and I have had several.

I just sold my 16 megapixels Fujifilm X-T1 which was a great camera that produced very high resolution images but unfortunately not sharp nor detailed enough for the price paid. I bought the Pentax K70 (body only) and instead of the kit lens I got the Pentax 16-85mm lens.

I really like the size, balance, feature set and value of the K70. It's easy to learn and very comfortable in the hand. I pair it with my 40mm pancake lens and the results are great. I love this little camera.

I am a Nikon user. But, it is difficult to beat the many features of this Pentax Camera. I purchased this instead of another Nikon. The controls are intuitive and make using this camera very easy.

I haven't used it to its full capability yet but based on my K30, it should be good. That camera had a known fault in it, but one learnt how to work around it - an accidental drop at night finished it off. I liked that it could be used in adverse weather (down to -25 degrees C).

I just love, love, love my new camera. The reason I chose another Pentax is because the K70 is similar in design to the K-X and it made it very easy to learn it quickly by reading the mini-manual they included. I had already downloaded the full manual and it gave me more information on the camera.
