It may be derivative, but the G9 is nonetheless a masterpiece. If good artists borrow and great artists steal, then Panasonic now finds itself on the camera industry’s most wanted list.

  • +

Great build quality, Intelligent control layout, 80MP high-resolution mode, 5-axis in-body stabilization, 6K photo and 4K video

  • -

Burst rate has odd limitations, Smaller sensor than similarly sized/priced competitors

8.5/10

The Panasonic G9 is one of the most well-balanced Micro Four Thirds camera to date. Capable of super fast burst speeds, with reliable AF as well as good-looking 4K, this camera can easily handle double duty.

  • +

Just about any photographer craving a camera that can handle both high-speed still photography and 4K/HD-video duty. Anyone seeking complete control of their camera.

  • -

Serious sports and action shooters, who would be better suited buying a camera with phase detect AF.

The Lumix G9 doesn’t hit the same highs as the a9 but, if you’re scared by the price-tag of the latter, this is a more-than-serviceable alternative at a third of the price.

  • +

Night mode, Shoulder-mounted information display, 6.5-stop stablization, 0.04-second autofocus, Weather-sealed design

  • -

Videographic capabilities not as robust as GH5

Overall, we consider the G9 the best camera Panasonic has made so far, particularly for enthusiast photographers who are mainly interested in shooting stills but also like to take high-resolution movies occasionally.

With mighty impressive image stabilisation, an ultra-sensitive shutter, super-fast burst mode, accomplished continuous autofocus and burst shooting, plus a viewfinder that's unrivalled by any mirrorless model, the G9 really is the finest mirrorless camera that money can buy.

  • +

Huge range of Micro Four Thirds lenses (incl. new 200mm f/2.8 Leica) ensure top image quality, Massive viewfinder and useful vari-angle LCD, 4K video and 6K stills modes, Super-fast burst modes, Accomplished continuous autofocus, Pinpoint AF mode

  • -

Viewfinder eyecup could fit tighter, Optional battery grip should offer two batteries, Smaller LCD screen than GH5, Smaller sensor than some rivals, No 'super raw' with post-focus adjustment (like Canon 5D IV)

Excellent image quality, 60fps shooting, polished handling and a wealth of advanced features add up to make the Lumix G9 a brilliant all-round mirrorless camera and Panasonic's best mirrorless camera to date.

  • +

6.5-stop image stabilization, Up to 60fps burst shooting, Large viewfinder, Great grip and handling, Dual UHS-II card slots

  • -

ISO range could be broader, Reduced screen size compared to GH5, Battery level not shown as a percentage

Panasonic’s best stills camera to date. The Lumix G9 is a sound mirrorless camera boasting a speedy specification, which it backs up with an admirable performance out in the field.

  • +

Superb design and handling, Excellent 4K & 6K photo modes, Well supported by Micro Four Thirds lenses, Offers high-resolution 40MP & 80MP modes

  • -

Positioning of AF toggle could be better, Lacks battery level indication as percentage, Burst shot mode descriptions aren’t clear, No in-camera panoramic mode

I wrote a recent review on the G 9 and remarked at what a wonderful camera it is. Please understand the 2 star rating was a mistake that I could not correct on my iPad. This is a 5 star camera for sure in my opinion. The uploaded images are jpegs straight out of the camera and not edited at all.

I have been an Olympus user for many years, and will continue to be so. This camera caught my interest when it was announced last fall, as it had appealing as it was geared to the stills shooter.I acquired the camera last month, and also purchased the 8-18, 12-60 and 100-400 Panasonic lenses.

I just received the Panasonic G9 that I've preorderd some time ago. It's hack of a camera! The first impression was, WOW this stays so good in the hand that I don't what to let it go. Leaving th jokes aside, I think it has the best ergonomy I've ever laid my hand on, period!

I've been shooting LUMIX Micro 4:3 (MF3) for 3 years and it's taken over all areas of my DSLR photography (except no light night sky landscapes). As a shooter who does mostly low light photography and video, Panasonic finally tuned the processor and sensor to meet my low light needs.

I was in San Diego visiting my daughter and granddaughter with my new G9. I set it to do face detect focus and exposure; and to take RAW+JPEG fine so I could see how it did. The answer is, it did GREAT. I am extremely pleased with its JPEG processing.

With my G7, which I traded in to get a G9, I shot raw all the time because the JPEG colors were not satisfying (to me). I knew I could produce something I'd like better than the OOC JPEG. The G9 is GREATLY improved. I am very impressed with its JPEG engine. I've been shooting RAW + JPEG fine.

great, big, heavy DSLM camera - but very good in most lightning situations, best electronic viewfinder till now. Fast and very good to handle, lot of fantastic and sharp lenses.

Great solid feel ... love this camera with the additional battery grip. Reminds me of the feel of a Nikon F5 which I loved. And of course the quality images are superb!

Landscapes with the 12-60mm kit lens and Wildlife with the 100-400mm lens. A great lightweight kit that I can carry all day and be ready for almost anything. I've been getting neck and shoulder pain with a full frame and this camera has made life a lot easier.

    Durable, Great Features, Lightweight

  • -

    Lacks sharpness above f/11
