The Olympus TG-5 is best viewed as a take-anywhere, shoot anything travel and action camera combined. Olympus has – for the most part, at least – taken the old ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach to this latest generation of ‘toughened’ model, which features mostly identical specification,...
Just received this in the mail today. My first impressions:**The camera is lighter and smaller than I expected, easily pocketable. Much more so than my previous camera (Canon G12). A lot of advanced featues packed into a small body.
Generally the TG-5 does what Olympus promises, but I take a lot of panoramas, and that feature just doesn't work well on this camera (check out the goofy rainbow I shot with it). After a couple day's use, I sent my TG-5 back and got a Nikon Coolpix AW130 for $200 less.
The TG 5 is a great camera - I have only had it a few weeks and so far it exceeds my expectations. Love not having to baby it, just carry it. Superb photos!
Compared to a 4year old Nikon all weatherCons: battery life inexistent, too much aberration, flat colors, the programs result into nothing but flat colors and lack of definition, the depth field is also to be desired,Pros: fast focusI wish I could return it.
Lots of features. Focus stacking and panorama mode of special interest to me. Perfect fit between cell phone and SLR and waterproof key feature. I plan to use it white water rafting through the Grand Canyon. Would be 5 stars for me if it had a bigger sensor.
I wanted a camera that my wife would actually enjoy using. This point and shoot size camera has many powerful features, yet it is extremely user friendly for anyone that is intimidated by larger fully functional cameras.
So that you know where I'm coming from I will tell you I am an avid amateur photographer. I have a Nikon D810 and an Olympus OM-D E-M1 mkII. I bought an Olympus TG-3 years ago for a trip. I liked it very much and told a fellow coworker so, who wrangled it out of me.
Being a biologist in Louisiana, I need a tough waterproof camera that can withstand many bumps and bruises. My Tough Guy is the answer. Ir has great macro for the small flowers and little critters and certainly beats lugging my large macro lenses into the swamp.
This is a take-it-anywhere companion to my Olympus EM-5. Having similar menus is a plus. I typically shoot raw+jpeg in P mode. Jpegs are good - perhaps better color and exposure than the EM-5. Raw format has already proven its worth for a couple of jpegs that needed extra help.
