The OM-D E-M1 Mark II is arguably the best Micro Four Thirds camera on the market today. All eyes are now on Panasonic and the upcoming GH5, but at least for the still photographer, the E-M1 Mark II is going to be hard to beat.

  • +

Great build quality, Very fast performance, Incredible in-body image stabilization, Professional quality 4K video

  • -

MFT format won’t meet needs of all photographers, Expensive

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II shoots faster and does more than other high-end mirrorless cameras, but it's also more expensive.

  • +

Up to 60fps Raw capture. In-body stabilization. Large, sharp EVF. Vari-angle touch-screen display. High-resolution capture mode. Robust lens system. Weather-sealed body. 4K video support. Optional vertical battery grip. Wi-Fi.

  • -

Expensive. Only one SD slot supports UHS-II. Tracking focus ineffective at top speeds. 60fps shooting is limited in duration. Very bright charging LED. Omits built-in flash.

The OM-D E-M1 Mark II is Olympus' most ambitious camera yet and it blows away its peers in terms of raw speed - and it's no slouch when it comes to photo and video quality, AF performance and build quality. The Mark II is customizable to the point where it's overwhelming, so it's not for everyone.

One of the fastest, most feature-laden cameras you can buy for less than $1,500, you really need to spend some quality time going through all the settings before using the Olympus OM-D E-M1.

  • +

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 is a great, feature-packed and weather-sealed camera that's fast and delivers high-quality photos and videos.

  • -

The out-of-the-box JPEG quality could be better and the sheer number of configuration options can at best test your memory and at worst, overwhelm. It deserves a better manual, as well as a second card slot.

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 is a fantastic mirrorless camera that is designed for the advanced or professional shooter. Those without sophisticated photography knowledge will get easily lost in the numerous features and functionality.

  • +

Great image quality, Weather proofed, Awesome grip, Great autofocus, Great viewfinder and LCD screen, DSLR-like feature set

  • -

Noise can be an issue at high ISOs, Cost, No second memory card slot

The OMD EM1 is the new flagship camera from Olympus. It joins the hugely popular OMD EM5 in the range, but is positioned higher, providing not just an upgrade path for EM5 owners, but also those who use the earlier E5 DSLR.

  • +

Excellent image quality with very usable OOC JPEGs., Weather-proof body., Built-in stabilisation works with any lens you attach., Superb ergonomics, controls & customization., Large & detailed electronic viewfinder. One of the best., Titling touch-screen., Very fast single AF speed with MFT lenses.

  • -

Image quality no better than EM5 or GX7., Continuous AF isn’t as confident as a DSLR using v/f., Phase Detect AF not used for movies or MFT lenses., Movies only available at 30fps., Focus peaking only for stills, not movies., Timelapse & miniature movies encoded at low frame rate.

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 surpasses everything that we have seen so far from an ILC. Providing amazing performance and image quality that rivals a lower level pro mode dSLR, this much smaller camera is ready to go anywhere and perform in all situations. Read more in our Full Conclusion .

  • +

iAuto shooting mode is accurate and easy in all situations, Dedicated Video Capture Button is always ready to record Full 1080p movies, Sealed Body and Magnesium Alloy frame provide a tough, go anywhere camera, Excellent overall image quality, Great Low-Light performance, Manual Mode offers complete...

  • -

No built-in flash - possible to forget or not bring the included attachable flash unit, Highest ISO settings are unacceptable due to image noise, Very high price tag for an ILC

Olympus put a great deal of effort into producing a flagship mirrorless camera that can match up against all but the most powerful DSLRs. While the EM-1 is slightly more expensive than comparable DSLRs, its weatherproofed body means enthusiast shooters need not fear adverse weather.

  • +

Great image quality, 10 fps burst shooting mode, Sharp, informative electronic viewfinder, Fast autofocus, Large number of customizable controls, Weatherproof magnesium alloy body

  • -

Steep learning curve, Mediocre video, Short battery life

Taking over from the first OM-D, the E-M1 delivers nearly impeccable performance worthy of its flagship status. This model features a state-of-the-art 16 megapixels CMOS sensor with built-in Phase-Detect autofocus while keeping its predecessor's 5-axis image-stabilization and super-sonic...

  • +

Low image-noise up to ISO 1600, Impressive dynamic-range, Reliable Automatic White-Balance, Superb built-in stabilization, Virtually no shutter-lag, Fast contrast-detect AF, Great shot-to-shot speed, Great EVF resolution and refresh rate, Unique Live-Bulb mode, Extremely customizable, Excellent...

  • -

Below average color accuracy, More over-exposure than usual, Not always Exposure-Priority and frequently wrong Live-Histogram, Poorly placed tripod mount, Low battery life, Video cuts last second

I use 4/3 and m4/3 Olympus cameras to compliment my FF Canon system when I need portability and discretion. After more than a decade shooting with E-1, E-3, EM5 I am stunned at how comprehensive the new OMD EM1 mkII is. In a word - OUTSTANDING.

Good camera but after two years the EVF has yellow green blotches. Evidently this is from sunlight getting in to the EVF. I don't know if this is still a problem with the newest Oly cameras.

I have been a happy user of m43 cameras since I bought the GH4 in June 2014. Since then I have added the GM1 and then also the OM-D E-M1. Recently I had the opportunity to trade in the E-M1 for the mark ii. Obviously having to also pay a bit of cash.

I've been using this camera for going on three years and I absolutely love what it can do; I primarily use it for photographing birds. Being an advanced beginner, I know there are many features I don't use, but I'm getting used to new ones little by little and as I want more versatility and...

I've had a lot of Olympuses (Olympi?), back to the film years, including an E-500 and both OMD-5 models. I skipped the OMD-1, so this is a significant change for me. There is so much packed in this body, but a few things jump out immediately:- The Custom settings on the dial - I never liked, or...

This camera is better than most photographers. It has more features than you can imagine. It is configurable in literally hundreds of ways. The image quality from its sensor is of professional caliber. Dynamic range and highlight/shadow recoverability has improved from the E-M1.
