The E-M1 does a lot of things very well, starting with the specification. It’s incredibly comprehensive and we’re sure that both enthusiast and professionals alike won’t be left wanting.

  • +

Build quality; Electronic viewfinder is excellent; Fast and responsive AF; Image quality

JPEG files a little over-processed at higher sensitivities

As a semi-pro option I'd say the OMD EM1 is a triumph. It has a tough weatherproof body that handles like a dream, feeling great in your hands with highly customizable but always intuitive and comfortable controls, sports one of the best electronic viewfinders around that actually delivers a...

  • +

Excellent image quality with very usable OOC JPEGs., Weather-proof body., Built-in stabilisation works with any lens you attach., Superb ergonomics, controls & customization., Large & detailed electronic viewfinder. One of the best., Titling touch-screen., Very fast single AF speed with MFT lenses.

  • -

Image quality no better than EM5 or GX7., Continuous AF isn't as confident as a DSLR using v/f., Phase Detect AF not used for movies or MFT lenses., Movies only available at 30fps., Focus peaking only for stills, not movies., Timelapse & miniature movies encoded at low frame rate.

With gorgeous images—even in low light, incredible speed, and a wealth of high-end features, the Olympus OM-D E-M1 is the best Micro Four Thirds camera that money can buy. It's an easy Editors' Choice award winner.

  • +

Impressive image quality, even at high ISO settings. Dust-proof, splash-proof design. Solid build quality. Excellent ergonomics. Best-in-class EVF. Wi-Fi. In-camera art filters and color control. Robust time lapse feature. Quick autofocus. 10.5fps burst shooting. In-camera image stabilization.

  • -

On the pricey side. No built-in flash. No support for 60fps video.

In most respects the E-M1 does a good job bridging the gap between a traditional DSLR and a Micro Four Thirds camera. Its controls and customizability may overwhelm less hands-on users, but those who don't mind tinkering will love its flexibility.

  • +

Sturdy, weather-resistant body with lovely retro styling, Excellent image quality, Chromatic aberration corrected in-camera making JPEGs more usable, 2x2 interface puts more controls at your fingers, Impressive number of customizable controls, Bright, sharp electronic viewfinder, Reliable Wi-Fi...

Interface and controls can be overwhelming initially, In-camera Raw conversion interface is somewhat unintuitive, Auto focus with Four Thirds lenses is slow in dim conditions with tricky subjects, Only one SD card slot, Inconveniently-placed power switch, Disappointing video quality, Multi-screen...

A big Olympus announcement was rumored even before my trip to NYC to unveil what is now known to be the OM-D E-M1. Although we all hoped for something huge, we weren’t really sure if the unveiling would match our expectations.

  • +

Great image quality, Weather proofed, Awesome grip, Great autofocus, Great viewfinder and LCD screen, DSLR-like feature set

  • -

Noise can be an issue at high ISOs, Cost, No second memory card slot

We don’t understand the sometimes over-the-top positive online reaction to this capable but hardly extraordinary mirrorless camera. Yes, it certainly can capture quality stills and good 1080/30p videos. But for $1,400 body only? No way.

Olympus is pushing the limits with its new ILC (Interchangeable Lens Camera), the OM-D E-M1. This compact camera has been designed to provide professional quality features, performance and image quality without the size and price tag that is associated with a professional camera.

  • +

iAuto shooting mode is accurate and easy in all situations, Dedicated Video Capture Button is always ready to record Full 1080p movies, Sealed Body and Magnesium Alloy frame provide a tough, go anywhere camera, Excellent overall image quality, Great Low-Light performance, Manual Mode offers complete...

No built-in flash - possible to forget or not bring the included attachable flash unit, Highest ISO settings are unacceptable due to image noise, Very high price tag for an ILC

The new Olympus OM-D E-M1 is the follower of the first OM-D, the proper and full name having been the “OM-D E-M5.” The E-M1 incorporates many of the E-M5 advantages, the famous five-axis image stabilizer being one of them.

Many pros flocked to the Olympus OM-D E-M5 as a lighter, more compact alternative to their big, bulky DSLRs. It was decidedly different from the Micro Four Thirds models that came before it, featuring blazing speed, a 5-axis in-camera stabilization system and best-in-class image quality.

  • +

Superior pro-level, weatherproof design and build, with magnesium alloy construction, Lots of physical controls, including the 2x2 Control Dial system, with immense customizability, Excellent image quality with very good high ISO performance that rivals APS-C models, New ISO 100 setting offers lower...

Larger and heavier than most compact system cameras, Lack of AA filter means moiré can be an issue (but seemingly little worse than the OM-D E-M5), Physical control customization and menu navigation has a high learning curve, Touchscreen controls not very helpful for navigating menus and changing...

I love it--I love shooting with it--love the features on it. Pictures I attached are shot with a 14 to 150 lens, all I can say I am very happy with it, only complaint is the short battery life but I guess that is because of the EVF

I consider myself an Olympus fan. I own two EM-1s and an EM10 and range of Olympus lens including several pro lens. I agree with the accolades directed towards the camera - small in size, beautiful feel in the hands, sharp pictures, a wonderful set of lens to use.

I really enjoy this camera. Impressive image quality, IS, weather sealing, size and weight. I like how customizable the buttons on the camera are. The camera feels good in my hand and buttons are easy to locate. Kudos for the placement of the Fn1 button. I use it for focusing.

Damn near perfect camera. Absolutely love it. Does more than I could ever imagine. I've had everything from an Olympus E1, E3, E30, E600, E500, EP1, EM5, EPM2 etc ....and this is the best camera yet.

I've used an EM5 for years, two EM1s since just after their introduction, and now enjoy an EM5 Mk2. Love them, especially with the incredible Olympus 4/3 lenses such as the 50-200 SWD and 35-100 2.0 ED. They're heavy; with the ED it is over 4.5 lb., but the images are well worth it.
