The E-M1X is the only twin-grip Four Thirds camera on the market squarely aimed at pros - it's large, fast and tough-built. But its price tag puts it in a tricky position, as plenty of other larger-sensor cameras can be had for considerably-less coinage - many even offer more reliable AF.

  • +

Current Micro Four Thirds shooters who want a twin grip camera to photograph fast-moving subjects.

  • -

Anyone not already heavily-invested in Micro Four Thirds glass. Those seeking a small, light camera.

Is the OM-D E-M1X the best Olympus camera ever made? Without a doubt. Is the OM-D E-M1X worth the premium price over the E-M1 Mark II? Depends on your needs. For pros who shoot long days in adverse conditions, the extra features, battery life, and performance make the X a worthy upgrade.

  • +

Class-leading image stabilization, Toughest pro camera on the market today, Fast AF, Hand-held High Res Shot & Live ND work great, Strong image quality in good/great lighting, Excellent battery life and fast in-camera charging, Wonderful ergonomics, No fatigue after long shoots, Best Olympus video...

  • -

Image sensor not great with recovering shadows or higher ISOs, We'd like to see Olympus upgrade their displays, Its fastest burst shooting modes don't include full-time AF, Experienced a few AF bugs, Sensor dust was an issue despite the Super Sonic Wave Filter, Missing touch-and-drag AF when using...

The Olympus OM-D E-M1X camera features a truly rugged, professional build, but its Micro Four Thirds image sensor lags behind the full-frame competition.

  • +

Sturdy, all-weather build. Five-axis sensor stabilization. Vari-angle touch LCD. Integrated vertical grip. 60fps Raw capture. Dual batteries and memory card slots. 4K video capture.

  • -

Expensive. Tracking not available at top burst rate. Relatively small Raw buffer. Incremental improvements. Underwhelming EVF.

With the world's best image stabilization, the E-M1X brings Micro Four Thirds to new heights.

  • +

7.5-stop image stabilization, Fast burst shooting and autofocus, Integrated dual-battery grip, 4K video with OM-Log400, Excellent weather-sealing

  • -

Expensive for the format, EVF is lower resolution than the competition, Larger, heavier than full-frame mirrorless

The Olympus OM-D E-M1X is a beefed-up EM1 Mark II, repackaging its 20 Megapixel sensor, 4k movies and 18fps bursts into a larger and tougher body with an integrated portrait grip, twin batteries, field sensors, improved autofocus tracking, USB power and even better built-in stabilisation.

In an industry where innovation is often limited to ‘more megapixels’, this camera has more brilliant new features than we’ve seen in a very long while. If size isn’t a factor, this is undoubtedly the ultimate Micro Four Thirds camera.

  • +

80MP Tripod High Res Shot, 50MP Handheld High Res Shot, Up to 7.5 stops of image stabilisation, Customisable, Tetris-like AF points, Joystick control

“Bulky” for Micro Four Thirds, “Pricey” for Micro Four Thirds

In 1965, Car & Driver magazine said this when testing the latest Mercedes Benz 190 sedan: “It’s as if a team of fanatical German engineers got together to produce a perfect 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air.

There are just some things that seem to be mutually exclusive. Night and day, power and portability, complexity and reliability. So when someone comes up with a way to bring opposites together, it’s almost always regarded as nothing short of genius.

A giant body is not what we expect from a Micro Four Thirds camera, but the E-M1X has plenty of benefits for action shooters

  • +

Great battery life, Excellent for wildlife/action, Built-in portrait grip, 60fps raw shooting

  • -

Bulky, Expensive, Small sensor, Limited pro lens range

Where to begin? A solid build, great handling, speedy autofocus, excellent response, lovely 4K video, sound image stabilization... Sure, there isn't quite enough here to justify such a hefty premium over the existing E-M1 Mark II or some rival models, but the E-M1X is still a hugely pleasing camera...

  • +

Excellent handling in both orientations, Speedy autofocus, Highly responsive touchscreen, Image stabilization works brilliantly, Great 4K video with low rolling shutter

  • -

Viewfinder can be unclear in low light, Noise appears early in ISO range, Menu system still a bit awkward, AF tracking can lose subject easily

Olympus South Africa very kindly loaned me an E-M1X for my recent Photo Safari to Sabi Sabi and while I only had a few days before leaving on the trip to become accustomed to the camera, I did manage to produce some great images (by my standards) while using it in conjunction with the Olympus 300mm...
