If you’ve got a smartphone, you’ve got an audio recording device with you. Anytime you want, you can fire up an app and record a conversation, a bit of a concert, or an audio snapshot. The results are often only so-so.

Excellent condenser mics arranged at 90° can handle up to 140 decibels. Multiple inputs can accept a variety of external mics or line-level sources. Can be used as a USB microphone to record audio to a laptop. Supports SD cards up to 64GB. Battery lasts 10 to 12 hours per charge.

0 price makes it a smart buy only for pros or serious live-music enthusiasts. It’s bulky, and tough to sneak past security at the Fillmore. Interface is more trial-and-error than intuitive, and the user manual is thicker than The Great Gatsby .

It’s time to take a peek at a sound recorder the likes of which we don’t see very often around these parts, the Olympus LS-100 , fully equipped to be your mobile recording studio on the go.

One of the new products Olympus introduced at CES 2012 was the LS-100 audio recorder . I had the chance to sit down with the LS-100 for a few minutes during a press briefing. Check out my hands-on report below.

As a recording device, the LS100 does almost everything required of it, and it's ahead of the competition when it comes to playback track provision and the app-style interface. In terms of computer interfacing and DSP effects, though, it lags behind some competing products.

  • +

It sounds good., Phantom power is independent for each XLR input., Can record and mix eight tracks., Variety of useful recording modes., Supports SDXC cards.

  • -

Can't record more than one stereo signal at a time, despite having four inputs., Takes a while to start up., Lacks on-board effects., The OS could be improved.

Pros: Typical solid Olympus construction; one which has a professional feel and the controls won’t make you wonder how long it will last. The raised lower edge with a U-shaped indentation was a well thought out ergonomic design feature.

I got this recorder two weeks ago, and I've used it for recording live events and interviews. The built-in mics capture phenomenal sound, and the XLR inputs offer lots of additional options.

The mic quality is very good on the LS-100 and it has some useful functionalities. BUT there are major flaws which have made me regret choosing this device over other similar ones like the zoom H4n.

Simply speak into the center of the microphones while recording with either limiter on and snap your fingers next to one microphone. Your voice will be hurled over to the other channel and it will take 5 to 10 seconds for it to slowly slide back into the center position.
