Despite having fewer megapixels than the Z7, Nikon’s Z6 is the better camera for most of us.

  • +

Fast 12 fps burst, Wider ISO range, Excellent low-light images, Attainable price point, Great image quality

  • -

Single card slot, Autofocus not as strong as DSLR

The Nikon Z6 is a well-built full-frame mirrorless camera that produces excellent stills and 4K video. Autofocus is reliable most of the time, including during burst shooting, though selecting a subject on which to track is clumsy.

    Everyday shooting, video

After launching the high-resolution, expensive Z7, Nikon has unveiled the much more affordable Z6. It’s the best full-frame mirrorless camera on the market for video, offering a full-frame, full-pixel sensor readout for super crisp 4K video.

  • +

Best full-frame mirrorless camera for video, In-body stabilization, Good ergonomics, Excellent images and color science, Relatively affordable compared to Z7

  • -

Mediocre autofocus subject tracking, Single card slot uses hard-to-find XQD format, Touch display doesn’t flip around

The Nikon Z6 is a remarkable first generation product, deftly balancing image quality, ergonomics, pricing, and compatibility with existing lenses. Despite costing around $1,400 less than a Nikon Z7, the Nikon Z6 retains all of the build quality while boosting performance in all but two areas...

  • +

Excellent image quality & dynamic range (expose for your highlights), Professional 4K & 1080p video capabilities, Improved video quality over the Z7 & D850, Rugged Build Quality, Tons of customizability, Sharp, clear displays (EVF & LCD), Sub-$2,000 pricing

We're spoiled by the Z7's extra megapixels for still images, We'd love to see EyeAF & improved low-light AF performance, We wish there were internal 10-bit video recording and 4K/60 capability, We prefer a Vari-angle display for added flexibility, The FTZ Adapter is too tall when; swapping between Z...

The Nikon Z6 is a high-end full-frame mirrorless camera that jointly launches the Z-system alongside its higher resolution but more expensive and slower sibling, the Z7. The Z6 enters an established and fiercely competitive market, aiming squarely at the Sony Alpha A7 Mark III and essentially...

For Nikon shooters looking to make the switch to a versatile, premium-quality, mirrorless camera, the new Z6 full-frame model is a no-brainer. It offers a familiar form factor, seamless compatibility with F-mount Nikkor lenses, and compatibility with Nikon speedlights and other DSLR accessories.

So is the Nikon Z6 just a consolation prize for those who can’t afford a Z7?...

  • +

12fps burst mode, Superb high-ISO quality, In-body stabilisation, Full frame 4K video, Stellar Z-mount lenses

  • -

Weak 310-shot battery life, Average buffer capacity, Some viewfinder lag

The Z6 and Z7 are Nikon’s first attempts at a full-frame mirrorless camera system. Although it took Nikon many years to finally come out with its own mirrorless system, it was definitely worth the wait for many Nikon photographers.

For the price, the build quality is amazing, the handling is so far ahead of the other CSCs and most DSLRs, the functionality is thorough, including the video and IBIS and the IQ is amazing. One of the best cameras currently available
