Despite its obvious quality, this lens does seem to be a little long in the tooth. More suited to specialised macro duties on a tripod than as a general purpose macro lens, it prove extremely hard to hand hold and get decent results.
Exceptional build quality, Good tripod collar (needed), Good CA/distortion control
Geriatric autofocus, Dated switching, Narrow depth-of-field
Nikon surely ticked all the boxes for this lens...great working distance for skittish bugs, 1:1 macro, aperture ring, ultra-sharp, negligible distortion, well-controlled diffraction at small apertures, spectacular manual focus ring both functionally and ergonomically, heavy-duty build quality,...
The lence is great, it takes amazing picture, I am more than satisfied with the product.
Great quality, Well Made, Amazing focus
Quite simply, this is a wonderful lens with superb image quality. It isn’t perfect—no lens is—but it does what it was designed to do, and it does so better than any other lens I’ve used for the purpose, including Micro-Nikkor 60mm AF-D, Tokina AT-X Pro 100mm macro, Micro-Nikkor 105mm macro,...
I have used this lens for 10 years and more than 30,000 photos. The quality has never let me down, from the D2x over a d800 to a d4 today. It was stolen badly dropped and still works fine apart from the AF which I don't miss much The focus ring could be more towards the camera but that is really all...
SHARP. VERY SHARP nice and small to pack uses small filters, easy to use with a polarizer easy to reach, tactile aperture ring works well with extension tubes Excellent build quality. Bomb proof :)
AF pretty useless Use MF and your body to focus MF ring badly placed away from the camera
I have 105mm, 55mm AI-s nikkor, they are both always give a good image results, infact most of my macro are taken from these lens. I also used 105mm sigma. But I am always admiring the 200mm image result from other posters ever since; this lens is my dream lens come true.
effective working distance, superb optic quality, deadly sharpness and color rendition, good focusing ring very handy, and a good back ground isolation.... over all it is a bomb.
none so far
This lens is so good that I would recommend it to anyone looking for the very best in sharpness, color and contrast in a long macro lens.
Superb optical qualities, razor sharp, great contrast, beautiful color fidelity
Front end heavy and rather long with attached lens hood and expensive.
Love this... I needed this for a longer focal length macro.
Great lens, made in Japan. Take care of this lens and it will last your lifetime. I have taken some amazing photos with it.
This is one of the very best lenses ever made by Nikon, or anyone for that matter. Listen, this is just as legendary, or maybe even more so, than the 200mm f/2 monster also made by Nikon (that which is also heavily coveted by many).
Excellent lens, nikkor optics at their best. must for any serious macro photographer
