The Nikon SB-500 is a great addition to the family of Nikon speedlights. It is easy to use, lightweight and very compact. It is fully compatible with Nikon’s CLS system and comes with very handy features like Commander and Slave modes.
The SB-500 is Nikon's best small flash made in 2015. It's small, fast and powerful. It does exactly what it needs to and gets out of my way so I can take pictures. The SB-500 is the best new flash Nikon has introduced since the SB-400 of 2006. If you think you want an SB-500, you'll love it!
Nikon’s SB-500 entry-level flashgun offers a GN (guide number) of 24 at ISO 100 and 24mm, which is relatively low, especially for the price... The back of the unit houses a single dial for mode selection, and two buttons to control your settings, which is less comprehensive than others in test.
Attached to an 8-frames-per-second D2Xs, set to TTL, my SB-500 can produce 35 fully-exposed images in five seconds continous shooting. Remarkable! This test is quite informal, however it serves to show how well this amazing speedlight performs.
I purchased the Nikon Z 6 mirrorless, which does not have a pop-up flash. On my two DSLRs, D750 and D7500, there is a popup which provides some basic illumination for when Im on travel and have not take a larger SB800.
The SB-500 is a great addition to my D7100. While it doesn't have the power of the larger Speedlights it's more than adequate for casual use. Its size allows me to carry it in my smaller bag, so I always have it with me.
I purchased this to augment my D500. A lot of complaints about the D500 revolve around the lack of a built-in flash and the loss of commander mode. This flash definitely does the job and provides for a better flash than could be had with a built-in.
I bought this flash as a trial and learning model for my D7000. It came very well wrapped and padded inside two boxes. It works great on and off camera. It took some time to figure out how to use this flash off-camera by watching various youtube videos and several trial and error settings attempts,...
Have owned several flash units and bought this when I changed camera brands. Finally, the flash results I've been trying for! Easy to use, performs well.
Perfect size for travel and use of two AA batteries makes it universal. Versatile and plenty of power. Off-camera control via CLS is a breeze -- albeit only channel 3 (strange - the SB-600 initally defaults to channel 3 also). I am sad it can not be used as a commander -- except on D750 and D810.
This is a nice, light, capable speed light. Reasonably powerful and 1/2 the weight of a SB-900/910, the size also makes it easy to carry along, even in a pocket. There are some limitations that you need to recognize, especially if using as a master or commander with an older Nikon camera, but as an...
Bought this primarily for it's compact size. It's light enough to leave on my D7200 anytime I think I might need a flash. Nice to have a good flash for fill. A great unit for walking around photography.
I bought this flash to go with my D-500 for use when traveling on vacation and for when I just don't want to lug my much larger SB-910 around. I have been pleased with the results so far for still shots.
