The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR lens entices buyers with a long zoom range, but image quality at the telephoto end is lacking.

  • +

Long 16.7x zoom range. Optical stabilization. 1:3 macro magnification. Relatively light and compact.

  • -

Distortion throughout range. Weak edge and telephoto performance. Hood not included.

This super-zoom lens for Nikon DX format DSLRs covers a huge 16.7x zoom range, equivalent to 27-450mm on a 35mm camera. It sports internal focusing, and Nikon's Vibration Reduction system.

*Based on CIPA Standard. This value is achieved when DX-format compatible lenses are attached to a DX-format digital SLR camera and zoom lenses are set at the maximum telephoto position.

I would have a huge problem if I had to say why there are two Nikkors 18-300 mm present on the market. Perhaps underestimating the rivals is one of the reasons. In 2012 Nikon, by offering an 18-300 mm model as the first, managed to beat Tamron when it comes to the focal range.

  • +

very useful focal range,, good resolution in the frame centre at all focal lengths,, proper correction of coma at longer focal lengths,, moderate vignetting at longer focal lengths,, slight astigmatism at longer focal lengths,, good performance against bright light,, quite silent and accurate...

  • -

weak image quality on the edge of the frame at all focal lengths,, high lateral chromatic aberration near the maximum relative aperture of 200-300 mm focal lengths,, significant barrel distortion at the wide angle and distinct pincushion in the 35-100 mm focal range,, modest standard accessory kit.

  • +

Good sharpness in the centre, especially when stopped down, Extreme 16.7x zoom range, Effective VR system, Good build, Relatively compact and lightweight

  • -

CA levels towards edges of the frame are high, Performance towards the edges of the frame could be considered disappointing at 18mm and 300m

The new standard for Nikon PC Tilt Shift lenses. I own the 24mm PC. It's a great lens. I use it for Architecture, landscapes and sometime portraits. No complaints. When I started looking at the 19mm PC, I wasn't convinced that the extra 5mm of width was worth the big bump in $$.

Very happy with this lens. It is a great option if you don't want to carry around multiple lenses. Its a little heavy, but if you don't mind the weight, this choice is well worth the money.

  • +

Eliminates need for carrying multiple lensesSolid performance

  • -

    A bit heavy

I replaced my 18-300mm model 2196 with this lens for one reason...weight! Although the specs of the older lens were slightly better with more glass and a littler wider aperture, this one takes excellent pictures. Plus, it can be carried around all day.

I've now taken hundreds of shots with my Nikon D7100 to compare the A. 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G DX with B. 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G DX and C. 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G FX, chosen best of three in all categories and carefully compared them. Here's what I've observed: 1.

  • +

Impressive focal length range; handy size; saves having to change lenses in the field

  • -

Vignetting at 18mm; not super sharp; focus breathing at 300mm with close subjects; significantly overpriced

I just returned a brand new 18-300mm f3.5-5.6. Failed to focus in low light and hesitated even outdoors

Traded in a Nikon 55-300mm that was not doing it for me. This 18-300mm is pricey but wonderful. Couldn't wait for a refurb model! Traveling, taking a lot of shots. Hasn't left my camera except for a day with a 35mm f/1.8 prime.

  • +

Fast Focus, Great Color, Not heavy, Sharp, Zoom lock

I had been using a standard 55-300 mm lens with the Vivitar 1.4 AF teleconverter to give me the longest lens I could get without going to one that required a tripod, and the system worked well.

I purchased this lens for a trip to Western Canada. Used it to shoot wide-angle scenics, flower, bird and insect closeups, and even a few family portraits. Wide or macro, the lens performed admirably, producing sharp images.
