Nikon has given professional shooters another outstanding camera with the D5. It is faster and sharper than its predecessors, with an autofocus system that actually enables users to take advantage of that speed and resolution.

  • +

Extreme ISO range, 153-point AF system, Great image quality, 12 FPS bursts, 200-shot buffer, 4K video with HDMI output

  • -

Slow Live View AF, No built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or GPS

The top-of-the-line Nikon D5 SLR doesn't disappoint thanks to best-in-class autofocus, 4K video recording, and a full-frame image sensor.

  • +

Fast 153-point autofocus system. 12fps continuous shooting. Strong high ISO image quality. 20MP full-frame image sensor. Tough, durable build. 3.2-inch touch LCD. Clean HDMI output. 4K video capture. Available with dual XQD or CF slots.

  • -

4K video is cropped. Underwhelming autofocus for video. No Wi-Fi or GPS. Omits in-body flash.

The Nikon D5 represents a more remarkable upgrade to the D4S than its appearance suggests. With a completely revamped autofocus system, the D5 will keep up with just about any subject under just about any lighting conditions.

  • +

Photographers who shoot fast action, are frequently using available light in low light situations, and those that need ultimate reliability in adverse conditions.

  • -

Hardcore landscape photographers or photographers on a budget, serious videographers, individuals that need ultimate Raw file flexibility and people that like to travel light.

So is Matter ready to give up his Nikon D4S and buy a D5? Not quite. “If I was just getting into the Nikon D system and didn’t have the D4S, there’s no question. I would buy it in a second,” he said.

The Nikon D5 is about pushing limits. This large professional DSLR has a full-frame 20 megapixels CMOS sensor which reaches a class-leading ISO 3,276,8,00 and can shoot continuously at 12 FPS for over 15 seconds and is even capable of 14 FPS with the mirror locked up.

  • +

Clean JPEG images, Outstanding high-ISO dynamic-range, Ultra-fast autofocus, Extremely senstive AF, Very fast continuous drive with deep buffer, Extremely responsive, Ultra-short black-out, Good color-accuracy, Flexible self-timer and exposure delay, Highly customizable with plenty of controls,...

  • -

Noisy RAW files, Poor Automatic White-Balance in low-light, Bizarre Auto ISO, Limited AF-coverage, Poor Live-view, not Exposure-Priority, 1.5X crop for 4K, Highly compressed 4K, Rather bulky

The Nikon D5 captures excellent images, but its 20.8-megapixel sensor trades low ISO dynamic range for excellent high ISO performance. What it doesn't compromise on is autofocus and speed with 153 AF points and 12fps continuous shooting for up to 200 images, respectively.

  • +

Excellent image quality; Excellent high ISO performance; Fast 153-point autofocus system; Fast continuous shooting speeds; 4K video recording; Pro-quality camera body; Outstanding battery life.

  • -

Large and heavy body might not be right for all; Loud shutter; Underutilized touchscreen; Low ISO dynamic range not as good as predecessor; Extended high ISOs not very useful; Sluggish Live View AF.

The D5 is an exceptional DSLR for any professional photographer. Whether you’re coming from a D4s or elsewhere, the D5 is a worthwhile upgrade. It is especially ideal for capturing motion and low-light media.

The D5 lets you select your preference—dual XQD card slots or dual Compact Flash slots. The XQD format is designed to take advantage of the speed that the D5 can offer photographers.

This is the ace, and we cannot help marvel at the Nikon D5’s solid imaging performance in terms of sharpness, details and full-bodied colours. High dynamic range and speed of shooting are aided by superior AF and ISO performances, and abysmally good battery life makes the Nikon D5 the best...

  • +

Great colour accuracy, Class-leading ISO performance, Precise, top-not autofocus, Extensive array of controls, Frankly insane battery life

  • -

Heavy, Slight loss of sharpness in JPEG compressions, Expensive

Let’s not sugarcoat it; the D5 is a niche camera. Even if you’ve got the cash to splash, it doesn’t mean you should - it makes sense in the hands of a pro photographer, but beginners will be lost.

It was a difficult decision for me to purchase a D5 after owning a Nikon D810 for two years. I am not a professional photographer but a photography enthusiast. I shoot ~100,000 pics each year at high school sporting events, concerts, etc... I love my D810 and all that it can do.

I've owned the D800/D4/D4S and a few other NIKON DSLR but this D5 is very very good for sports and fast moving objects. And taking pictures at night.

I'm a professional photographer, working seven days a week, normally 8-12 hour days including editing. I don't have time to waste and can't compromise on image quality and need a fast workflow.

Is very good camera me I do landscape photographs I hope like next camera D5s or D6 (I don't know) to have 24 Megapixels, for me this resolution it's enough. Is necessary like Nikon to do new lens 14-24 mm which can read resolution over 18 Megapixels.

My 9 year old needed a new camera, she's inspiring to become a Instergram queen. She said this is what the professionals use and she needed it. So far the selfies have come out pretty clear. Been dropped a few times and seems really solid. She said it's too heavy and needs to lighter one.

I don't like where the iso adjustment button is and I don't like that pushing 1/2 way down on the exposure button only locks the focus and not the exposure too. Am I wrong about this?

This thing is a rocket. Have not had it in the field yet, just shooting around the house. I have found a noticeable difference between my D4s and the D5. It's ability to focus is amazing. I went with the CF version as i am not shooting super fast, 100 shot bursts.

I purchased the D5 about a month ago and have a few thousand shots on it.Truthfully, I'm still getting used to it. I'm coming from a D800 (Which is also excellent) because I wanted another tool to cover the higher frame rate and greater low light capability.
