Nikon's D5500 is an upper entry-level DSLR aimed at photographers looking for a step-up from a budget model without the expense or complication of a higher-end camera. It shares the same 24 Megapixel resolution as the models above and below it, but remains the only model in the entire range to...

  • +

Low noise and potentially high resolution., Large, fully-articulated touchscreen., Fairly compact body for a traditional DSLR., Built-in Wifi, but unlike D5300, relies on phone for GPS., 1080p movies at a variety of frame rates.

  • -

Need to upgrade kit zoom to exploit full resolution., Relatively small viewfinder image size., Basic smartphone app and network open by default., Quiet mode isn’t that quiet., Continuous AF in Live View and movies can be noisy.

The Nikon D5500 is a good entry-level option for those looking to buy their first DSLR. It’s a minor upgrade to the D5300, so it’s nothing to jump up and down about for existing Nikon owners; outside of the touchscreen LCD and expanded native ISO range, there’s no need for owners of the older model...

  • +

Quality 24MP stills, Decent 1080/60p movies, Vari-angle, touchscreen LCD, Great user interface for newbies

  • -

Less-substantial construction, Weak 18-55mm lens kit

The D5500 is a compact, lightweight, and very competent DSLR. Its image quality and continuous AF is impressive, feature set is broad, and performance is strong. It's not great for continuous Raw shooting and the lack of a second control dial may put off some enthusiasts, but overall the D5500 is...

  • +

Excellent image quality with wide dynamic range, Compact and light yet well-built body with perfectly designed grip, 3.2" fully articulating LCD ideal for video and tripod use, Touchscreen makes menu navigation and rack focusing easy, Impressive focus tracking despite low resolution metering sensor,...

  • -

Fine detail in JPEGs can get smudged at higher ISOs, Lacks second control dial found on most of competition, Limited buffer memory affects continuous shooting and bracketing when using Raw, No aperture control or Auto ISO in movie mode, No exposure simulation in live view, Buttons are very small,...

The Nikon D5500 D-SLR delivers images that are just as good as the D5300 it replaces, and manages to do so in a smaller body.

  • +

Omits optical low-pass filter. Sharp vari-angle touch display. Solid detail at high ISOs. 5fps continuous shooting. 39-point AF system. Quick startup. 1080p60 video. Integrated Wi-Fi. External mic support.

  • -

Smaller body means controls are somewhat cramped. Pentamirror viewfinder. No GPS. Will not autofocus with screw-drive lenses. Limited Wi-Fi remote control. Self-timer deactivates after use. Lacks depth of field preview.

Nikon's mid-level DSLR line gets a solid upgrade in the form of the D5500, now the smallest and lightest DSLR yet made by Nikon. But don't let the small form factor fool you, as there's a lot of firepower packed inside this little gem.

  • +

Amazingly small for a DSLR; Great image quality for its class, including superb low light and high ISO performance; Generous JPEG buffer depth; High resolution., Amazingly lightweight and compact for a DSLR, Great image quality for its class, Excellent dynamic range, Excellent high ISO performance...

  • -

Buffer depths are shallow when shooting RAW; Lacks GPS from the predecessor; No AA filter means it's susceptible to aliasing artifacts., Auto and Incandescent white balance settings too warm in tungsten lighting, Shallow buffers when shooting RAW, Burst mode slows down with 14-bit RAWÂ files,...

The Nikon D5500 is a fantastic mid-level dSLR, providing excellent image quality and performance. It is incredibly simple to use and sports some great features like built-in WiFi, and articulating touchscreen LCD, and more. Read more in our Full Conclusion .

  • +

Auto and Program modes are accurate and provide outstanding image quality, Dedicated Video Capture Button is always ready to record, Nikon F mount allows you to use the huge selection of lenses, Excellent overall image quality at all ISO levels, 921k dot LCD provides great color and a ton of detail,...

  • -

Only one command dial slows down your adjustments when shooting manually, but keeps the body simple, Priced slightly higher than most entry-level dSLRs, but worth the extra cost

Lightweight and compact with everything the family photographer needs, the Nikon D5500 maintains its position as a great general-purpose dSLR.

  • +

The Nikon D5500 delivers excellent photo quality as well as a performance that can keep up with your kids and pets.

  • -

The redesigned grip may not be comfortable for people with large hands, and Nikon really needs to update its Wi-Fi app.

Nikon has been introducing DSLRs at a fairly steady pace, releasing the D810, then the D750 and now the D5500. The D5500 is the mid-range model in the lineup and is different from the lot, simply because the camera comes with a fully articulating touchscreen, which also necessitates having a button...

  • +

Amazingly small; very well designed grip; touchscreen features are welcome; feature-packed.

Viewfinder image could be larger; battery life is good but not great.

If you buy it with 18 - 140 MM, you can save some money there compared to if you buy it with traditional 18=55 MM lens. Plus, 18-140 mm serves your all time purpose. Also, keep a room for buying that 35 mm Prime lens for that awesome portrait photography.

I have been a Nikon camera owner for many years and so more used to the heaver mechanical metal cameras of the past and this looked plastic and cheap to the feel from the display shelf. I took this camera home and put it through many tests.

Upgraded from the D-3200 to the D-5500 and what a great camera! The transition from the 3200 to the 5500 was VERY easy. The tilt feature of the rear screen is the best. Also the lighter /slimmer body style is great for heavier lens (55-300mm in the bundle).

I've been doing photography for years, including darkroom work, and decided to upgrade when I found a Nikon that had what I wanted on it. I've held off for a long time and finally found the price and features I wanted at Sam's. This package has Nikon glass.

I have been shooting with the d810 as my primary body and decided to try the d5500 based on a few blogs I follow that suggested it was actually a very capable camera squeezed into a VERY small package. I could not agree more.
