The Nikon D500 puts the company's finest autofocus system in a tough, compact SLR body that will please demanding enthusiasts and pros alike.

  • +

Solid build. Advanced, edge-to-edge autofocus system. 10fps capture with tracking focus. Large buffer for extended shooting. Superb high ISO image quality. Clean HDMI output. Excellent control layout. Tilting touch-screen LCD. Dust- and weather-resistant design. XQD and SD card slots.

  • -

Snapbridge wireless transfer needs some work. 4K video is cropped. Omits built-in flash.

There's tons to like about the Nikon D500, from its fast shooting and excellent image quality to its broad feature set and streamlined design. But it still falls short with its Live View autofocus and seriously subpar wireless file transfer and shooting operation.

  • +

The Nikon D500 is fast with excellent continuous-shooting and autofocus performance, its 4K video support is a welcome novelty for its dSLR price class and, of course, there's the great photo quality.

  • -

Terrible wireless file-transfer and remote-control app, and its Live View (contrast) autofocus could use a boost.

Camera reviewers tend to get jaded as we play with the latest toys all the time, often questioning whether a new product is as good as a company claims. Well, Nikon has certainly delivered a lot with the new D500.

  • +

Amazing autofocus system, Excellent stills, very good 4K quality, ISO 1,640,000 max setting, Supports fast XQD storage format, Bluetooth pairing

  • -

Video AF could use more finesse

The D500 marks Nikon's welcome return to the high-end APSC DSLR market. The combination of a new 20 Megapixel sensor, 10fps continuous shooting, a deep buffer (especially if you're using XQD cards), and a new 153-point AF system shared with the D5, makes for a supremely confident camera.

  • +

Very good quality images from 20 Megapixel APSC sensor., 153-point AF system with very broad coverage and auto fine-tuning., 10fps shooting with deep buffer, especially with XQD cards., Large, bright viewfinder with LCD overlays., Tough weatherproof body.

  • -

Poor movie autofocus, no focus peaking, no 1080 above 60p., Very basic smartphone remote control., SnapBridge bottleneck when shooting bursts or copying 20MP images., 4k video involves a tight 1.5x crop – a total field reduction of 2.25x., No truly silent shooting.

The Nikon D500 is the D5's little sibling, a smaller-sensored camera with some of the same big features.

  • +

Fast 10 fps burst, Quick, accurate autofocus, Solid image quality, Weather-sealed body with tilting LCD

  • -

Slow video autofocus, Heavy, No pop-up flash

When looking at the Nikon D500, you might expect it to be a much more expensive camera. It has great performance speeds, plenty of manual control dials, a high resolution tiltable LCD that has touch capabilities, and a high quality viewfinder.

  • +

Contains many features you'd expect to find on a more expensive DSLR, High ISO performance is outstanding versus others in this price range, Image quality is very good across a range of photographic conditions, Camera's performance is very fast in Viewfinder mode, Plenty of dials and buttons for...

  • -

APS-C sized image sensor can't quite match full frame sensors in image quality, D500 carries a high price tag versus other intermediate DSLRs, No built-in flash unit, Menu interface needs to be upgraded and be more graphical to take advantage of touch screen, Performance slows quite a bit in Live...

While not a compact DSLR, the Nikon D500 offers a lot of imaging capabilities in its rugged, pro-oriented camera body. It also has a very good 153-point AF system, fast continuous shooting performance and 4K UHD video recording, making it one of the most capable, well-rounded DSLRs that Nikon has...

  • +

Superb image quality; Great high ISO performance; Rugged, comfortable camera body; Sharp articulating touchscreen display; Excellent AF point frame coverage; Fast continuous shooting speeds; 4K UHD video; Built-in Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth.

  • -

Somewhat large for an APS-C camera; Expensive for a DX camera; 4K UHD video doesn't offer full DX field-of-view; No built-in flash; Still uses contrast-detect for Live View AF; Dual slots use two different card types (XQD and SD).

The D500 is among the best DSLRs we've ever tested. Its strengths are its superlative autofocus combined with the ability to keep shooting at 10 frames per second. There are other APS-C cameras that offer similarly excellent image quality but none that offer the speed, ergonomics and dependability...

The Nikon D500 is a great camera and anyone who purchases it will really enjoy using it. Full frame is great, but if you are a photographer who likes to zoom in, then the DX may suit you more. If you shoot sports, birds, wildlife or macro, look at this camera, it could be just what you need.

I never did completely lose faith. I think in the end it was probably just myself, Thom Hogan and one or two others – the true believers. Nikon would give us a legitimate successor to the D300S.

Obviously, by now, the reviews for the D500 are plentiful. However, after 4 months of ownership, I can vouch for virtually everything positive that has been said, thus far.The AF system on this camera is simply mindblowing -- there is absolutely nothing it can't track quickly and accurately (please...

This is indeed a great setup for wildlife. The VR of the lens is insane, the faster fps of the camera makes a noticable difference over my slower Nikon bodies, with more decisive moments captured in a series.

I'm very happy to buying the Nikon D500. All the wonders of the camera, the high ISOs have impressed me a lot. (Me siento muy contento de haber comprado la Nikon D500. En todas las maravillas que tiene la cámara, los ISO altos me han impresionado mucho.)

I thought long and hard about a replacement for my D7100, which has served me pretty well for the last three years, but which had a few niggles that I think affected my ability to deliver great images in the demanding lighting that I often shoot.

I do a lot of theater photography for the city where I live and needed a camera that would perform in very low light, such as rehearsals. So far I have not at all been disappointed in the D500. It is all it was touted to be.

I have been photographing for wel, over fifty years. I have owned 35mm, medium and large format!Still love my Nikon F5 but the D500 is the benchmark of cameras anywhere, anytime!
