When compared to all other ultra to moderately wide angle lenses (18mm to 28mm) based on the overall performance, Nikon's AF Nikkor 20mm f/2.8 does not quite stack up. The lens shows weak border performance at wide apertures on both full frame as well as APS-C type cameras and falls prone to pretty...

What you should know : If any optic in Nikon's extensive lens line can be called a standard ultrawide, it's the long-running 20mm f/2.8D AF Nikkor. Covering an impressive 94- degree angle, it's also pleasantly compact and fast enough for available-light shooting.

This summary will be exceptionally short. A very unfavourable pros to cons ratio in the case of a lens with the price tag of 520 $ should definitely put us off the purchase very effectively. As a consolation for the Nikon fans we can add that the Canon aficionados don’t have it easier either.

  • +

very good image quality in the frame centre,, well-corrected astigmatism,, correct work against bright light,, no reservations about autofocus work,, compact and quite solid barrel at the same time.

  • -

weak image quality on the edge of the frame,, high chromatic aberration,, noticeable distortion,, visible coma,, high vignetting,, steep price.

The Nikkor AF 20mm f/2.8 D had a very good reputation during the film era but the D200 didn't really like the lens. The resolution is fine for most of the APS-C image frame but the extreme corners never really reach impressive results even at medium aperture settings.

This is a very practical, take with you, lens. It is pretty good wide open, and very sharp stopped down. Nice contrast and color. I was looking at the zooms like the 14-24 & 16-35 but had to ask myself would I really want to lug these large heavy special use lenses around with me all day, for...

This review pertains to the 20mm f/2.8D on a DX camera. (D90) giving the shooter a 30mm equivalent prime. The main benefit of this lens is that it focuses closer than my connivence zoom (18-200 DX) with a .25m close focus minimum vs. .50m on the zoom.

This is a lightweight landscape lens that gives great depth of field results. Colors pop and sharpness from forground to background is great with this lens. Also excellent for architectural photography. Guard against lens flare and get compatible Nikon lens hood.

I love this lens. Not quite as sharp as a 17-35, and a couple notches down from the 14-24, but still a lens that results in better pictures simply because of its size and weight.

  • +

    Very compact, very fast AF.

  • -

Soft with more distant objects wide open.

This is my first super wide fix focal length lens. In the short time that I have had it, it has produced stunning results. The image comes through crisp and clear. The colors are outstanding. I brought this lens with me to photograph Italy, and all I can say is, wow.

  • +

    * Crisp clear results, * Colors are great., * Little to no image distortion.

  • -

    * No lens hood

I normally shoot close and tight to my subjects but for wedding photography, this thing does very well when it comes to wide angle interior shots. It's got plenty of distortion but very workable in Camera Raw and Photoshop.

great price for the focal length comp to other lenses. sharp!

  • +

price (used), a bit noisy (used?)

  • -

slight flare prone, slight distortion (rectilinear), slow AF, decent close-up performance
