This telephoto zoom lens costs around £440 and covers the popular 70-300mm range plus it sports Vibration reduction and a silent wave focusing motor.

Hands on Nicely and conservatively finished in semimatte black, this lens is a good match with medium to heavy Nikon bodies (such as the D80), but it's very nose-heavy on lightweights like the D40.

The biggest attraction of this full-frame zoom lens for the vast majority of us who use APS-C Nikon cameras is that the 1.5x crop factor gives a mighty effective telephoto reach of 450mm at the long end of the zoom range.

  • +

Excellent sharpness in the centre between 70mm and 135mm, Good build quality, Vibration Reduction

  • -

Chromatic aberrations towards the edges at 300mm, Reduction in sharpness at 300mm and f/5.6

The Nikkor AF-S 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED VR may not be the Über-lens everybody was hoping for (nor was that realistic) but it is still a very good lens. At 70mm the results are nothing short of stellar and still easily on a very good level at 200mm.

To put it in a nutshell Nikon took up to the challenge of the Canon 70-300 IS in a stylish and efficient way. Both lenses have similar properties with the similar pros and cons list and one serious slip-up – in the case of the Canon it was the autofocus, which, for an USM mechanism works badly; in...

  • +

solid barrel,, very good image sharpness in the frame centre,, good image quality at the frame edge,, low distortion,, slight coma,, well-corrected astigmatism,, low vignetting,, efficient stabilization,, excellent autofocus.

  • -

high or very high chromatic aberration at all focal lengths,, at 300 mm image resolution could have been better.

I wanted to be able to take bird photos and needed a better telephoto lens. I got what I wanted. I could not be happier with the results. As a non professional I needed something I could understand and the chat on the website helped me so this. I have added a photo.

Have had this lens in my camera bag for almost 10 years and it has never disappointed. Have used it on both my digital cameras (D300 and D610) as well as my F100 for everything including wildlife and sports photography.

I bought this lens as a cheap foray into the world of Nikon once again. The lens is a exercise in mediocrity. It's not a bad lens but it's not a great lens. It is priced in the middle for a middle series lens. It's not cheaply built, on par with the gold ring lenses.

  • +

-Reasonably Well built, -Focuses reasonably closely, -Dual Mode VR

  • -

-To get a sharp picture (but it will do it), -Turning on the VR will cause you photo to loose sharpness, -A little on the porky side

Upgraded from 55-300mm VR to this lens. I'm happy with AF speed, even at 300mm. (55-300 AF is slow). Sharp for most of it's range. Built quality is good and lens barrel travels smoothly. AF is very quite, but you can hear VR operation sometimes. I liked the placement of focus ring.

I use this lens for landscape and wildlife photography and I could not be more pleased with the performance. I use this lens with a Nikon D90 and the combination creates the most amazing photos. This is a lens that even the novice can use to produce breathtaking photographs.

I'm a casual photographer and I enjoy shooting wildlife, natural scenes, and macro/texture shots. I've enjoyed the ease of use, and the vibration reduction is unbelievable. From the moment I mounted the lense and started using it, I was immediately excited and pleased with my new lens.
