The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.4G is a wide-angle lens that's sharp and captures a lot of light, but it's quite expensive.

  • +

Excellent center sharpness. Wide aperture gathers a lot of light. Solid build quality. Good close focus capability.

  • -

Some edge softness at wider apertures. Mild barrel distortion. Expensive.

In short, this is a highly corrected lens that is likely to satisfy even the most discerning users. Nikon users whose pockets are less deep can choose between the 35mm f/1.8 DX lens, for around £160, and the 35mm f/2 D version for about £260.

If you're looking for a value buy, this isn't it. This one's for the high rollers.

Buy this lens only for 35mm film or FX. This 35mm f/1.4 G AF-S is a very expensive professional FX and 35mm film lens. It costs ten times as much as the 35mm f/1.8 DX , which does exactly the same thing on DX.

I'd be very careful not to cross-thread the plastic filter thread.

Last month we tested the industry’s least expensive 35mm f/1.4 lens (the $500 Rokinon 35mm AS UMC). This month, we shift to the opposite end of the pricing spectrum to one of the most expensive: Nikon’s $1,800 full-frame 35mm f/1.4G lens.

Handling and features This wide angle lens from Nikon costs around £1300 and sports a bright f/1.4 maximum aperture, silent internal focusing and nano-crystal coatings to help control ghosting and flare.

For this lens, it comes down to essentially one qualification. If you're a Nikon shooter who needs the absolute fastest 35mm lens, either for light-gathering ability or for the ability to put the background way out of focus, then for $1,800 it's either the Carl Zeiss or the Nikon 35mm Æ’/1.4G.

The latest addition to Nikon's stable of fast primes, the Nikon 35mm f/1.4G AF-S offers Nikon users a classic focal length with all the cutting-edge features we've come to expect. With a big price tag, the question with the 35mm f/1.4G is whether it has the performance to match.

For those looking for a wide angle lens with a fast maximum aperture could do a lot worse than this 35mm f/1.4 from Nikon. Sharpness levels in the centre are extremely high from maximum aperture, it's well built and focuses fast.

  • +

Very sharp in the centre of the frame, Silent focusing, Low distortion, Very low CA, Highly resistant to flare, Durable weather-sealed magnesium construction

  • -

Falloff of illumination towards the corners at wide apertures, Sharpness towards the edges of the frame falls behind the performance in the centre of the frame

The Nikon AF-S 35mm f/1.4 G is able to deliver impressive results on our DX test camera, however it is not without flaws. The image center is very sharp right from the largest aperture, but the borders and corners are quite soft wide open.

Small, light... the perfect balance between focusing on your subject and engaging the background to tell the full story. It's an amazing lens. I was hesitant. The cost is substantial but anything this good is. I went back and forth and back and forth until I closed my eyes and swiped the card.

Fantastic lens - I have the 50mm and 85mm 1.4 which I have found a challenge to capture group shots of my kids. The 35mm is wide enough to do that without distortion.

The image quality of this lens is great. Sharpness, contrast are very good straight from the maximim aperture. Bokeh is good too. Unfortunately there is rather a high amount of CA. The auto focus speed is fast enough, but not as fast as the 24-70mm f/2.8G.

I have the 85mm f/1.4G and was told this lens is a great partner for it. I am a portrait photographer and was using the 85mm and a 24-70mm f/2.8 but wasn't as thrilled with the 24-70mm images after getting the 85mm. I have only shot with this twice but it is impressive so far!

There are no qualms with this 35.Do you need a solid Nikon 35, look no further.

The 35mm 1.4G has always been my workhorse as a Photojournalism student, as it pushes you to get closer to the people your photographing, with the advantage of a wider focal length than the 50mm.

Excellent prime lens. Beautiful bokeh. Sharp. Amazing in low light. Great focal length. Performs beautifully with wonderful versatility on my D800 in a myriad of situations: portrait; group; event; landscape; documentary.
