Nikon's upgraded 24-120mm now has a constant f/4 aperture. Along with its 5x zoom range and vibration reduction, it should be a very interesting all-purpose lens.

  • +

Very good sharpness throughout the zoom range, Vibration reduction, Build quality, Constant f/4 aperture, Useful zoom range

  • -

Harsh vignetting at 24mm, Distortion at either end of the zoom range

Wedding, event, travel, portrait and landscape photographers in need of a do-everything-well, all-purpose zoom lens that can fit in the palm of your hand should run to their nearest Nikon dealer and gobble up the new AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR.

  • +

Pros: This could be all the lens you’ll ever need.

  • -

Cons: Your needs may be more complicated than that.

Nikon's produced a nice kit lens for full-frame bodies, though it's not without its caveats. The lens fared quite well in our tests, for the most part - the big problem is the wide open performance at 70 and 85mm, where it's quite soft indeed when used at Æ’/4.

The Nikkor AF-S 24-120 mm f/4G ED VR offers an attractive zoom range with excellent sharpness in the image center at the lower end of its focal range. However, the image borders and corners show a little less resolution wide open than we had expected from a lens in this segment.

The Nikkor AF-S 24–120 mm f/4G ED VR, despite several flaws, is a well-done lens for sure. I would sing the praises of it for several paragraphs if only the price was lower. Currently it costs about 1140 $ and it is really a significant amount of money.

  • +

efficient image stabilization,, very good image quality in the frame centre for the whole range of focal lengths,, not bothersome distortion on the DX sensor,, low astigmatism,, negligible vignetting on the DX sensor and acceptable vignetting on full frame,, good work against bright light,, silent,...

  • -

very high chromatic aberration near the maximum relative aperture,, low quality of image on the edge of full frame near the maximum relative aperture,, significant distortion on full frame,, noticeable coma.

This is my second purchase of the 24-120mm Nikkor lens. After many years I knocked over my tripod and the first lens went crashing to the cement. Went on-line and immediately ordered a replacement. I feel this is one of the very best "compromise" lens on the market.

Very impressive lense at all focal lengths. Distortion is present but is easly correctable in Adobe Lightroom

  • +

Easily Interchangeable, Nice Bokeh, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Great all around lens, Durable, Consistent Output, Sharp Quick Focus, Strong Construction

  • -

    Heavy

I have been using this lens on a crop camera for over 2 years. With the exception of the zoom creep and weight at first I really enjoyed the lens. But lately I have been having serious back focus issues which were not fixed in 2 labs. The lens also has relatively high CA.

  • +

good zoom range, build quality, constant F4 aperture

  • -

heavy, zoom creep and no lock, back focus issue, expensive

Heavy but durable and has produced some super clear and detailed pictures! Fills a needed gap in my lense collection.

Consistent Output, Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Strong Construction

  • -

    Heavy, NONE

I'm a professional photographer, who only used prime lenses. This is the first zoom I found sharp enough to use. I don't have to remove the lens for almost all of my work, eliminating dust on the sensor due to changing lenses.

Bought this lens as a replacement for my 24-70mm f/2.8. For my purpose it works just fine. I was needing a little more reach and VR and this fits the bill very nicely. F/4.0 is definitely slower than f/2.8 but again it is all I need. Focus's fast with no "hunting" or "lens creep.

  • +

Fairly good range. Used on a D7100 it has great telephoto but not as great wide angle. Constant f/4.0 is a big plus.

  • -

It is great for what it is. Really wouldn't be fair to compare it to mid-range f/2.8 zoom.

This is not a bad lens, nor is it a stand-out optical achievment. Nikon designed it to fill a hole in their system vs. Canon and it does that..

  • +

VG build, VR modes, some weather sealing, good focal range

  • -

Hilariously expensive for slow glass, big and heavy, not the sharpest at the longer end

Have not shipped my order. No explanation. Have not replied to my request to cancel order. I don't even know if they really exist.

Having used the old 24-120AF and two samples of the 24-120 ED VR with variable aparture, I was more than excited when Nikon announced this new optical instrument. It it superior to its predecessors in every aspect.

  • +

    Sharp, Versatile

  • -

    Distortion, Lightfall-off on 24 mm
