Nikon offers a surprisingly large number of lenses that start at 18mm; 18-55mm, 18-105mm, 18-140mm, 18-200mm and 18-300mm; but despite having the smallest zoom range the 18-35mm version is the best lens overall.

  • +

Full-frame coverage; Impeccable MTF performance; 18mm maximum coverage; Virtually silent AF; Full-time MF option; Lightweight

  • -

Modest maximum aperture; Limited 2x zoom range; Fiddly lens hood

Announced in January 2013, Nikon’s new full-frame 18–35mm f/3.5–4.5G ED AF-S ($747, street) will undoubtedly soon replace the still-in-stores 18–35mm f/3.5–4.5D IF ED ($610, street).

Handling and features An ultra-wide angle zoom lens for FX format DSLRs covering an ultra-wide field of view without the size, weight or cost of constant aperture f/2.8 or f/4 equivalents. This lens costs around £600 and includes silent focusing with full time manual focus override.

The Nikkor AF-S 18–35 mm f/3.5–4.5G ED is certainly an interesting lens. Nikon didn’t go over the top with its price so even the owners of the cheapest full frame reflex cameras can be tempted by it.

  • +

very good resolution in the frame centre,, good image resolution on the edge of the APS-C sensor,, negligible longitudinal chromatic aberration,, good performance against bright light,, slight astigmatism,, silent and efficient autofocus,, moderate vignetting for such a class of equipment,, sensible...

  • -

weak image quality on the edge of full frame at the maximum relative aperture,, build quality of the casing and the manual focus ring should have been better,, high distortion on wide angle.

Based on sharpness alone, this is a great lens, at a reasonable introductory price from Nikon. Sharpness in the centre of the frame is outstanding throughout the zoom range and CA levels are kept under control.

  • +

Outstanding sharpness in the centre throughout the zoom range, Resistant to flare, Good build, Reasonably lightweight, Good CA control

  • -

Barrel distortion at 18mm, Falloff of illumination towards the corners at 18mm

The Nikkor AF-S 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 G ED delivers excellent center sharpness and very good border and corner performance throughout most of the zoom range, at least when stopped down. Only at the long end of the zoom range the overall resolution drops a little.

I wanted an ultra wide for my Nikon D750 to supplement my Nikkor 28-300. It was a decision between the Nikkor 16-35mm or this 18-35. DxO Mark says that for my D750, this 18-35 would be sharper than the more expensive 16-35mm. Wow.

I have had this lens for a number of years. I find it to be a very reliable, very sharp lens that is in the true sweet spot of wide angle zoom lenses. Do I wish I had the the 16-35, F4? Hardly ever to be honest.

I had to throw a 10 in here to balance out the relatively low ratings. Some earlier ratings gave this lens effusive praise with little criticism and left 8s! Compared other lenses ranked here, this one should be above 9.5.

  • +

Excellent center sharpness throughout FL range, very good corners, lightweight, takes filters, good flare resistance, competes well against more expensive options

  • -

    distortion at 18-20mm, no VR

Bought this to replace a pair of much older primes. Extremely sharp and VR helps when needed. The dust seal is also greatly appreciated.

I love the fact that this lens is lightweight considering that it is a wide angle lens. Good for street/landscape photography because sometimes you cannot use your feet to move back and fit everything you want in the frame. So I am using this lens a lot for street photography.
