The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens shows a lot of distortion, but Nikon cameras can correct that.

  • +

Sharp through most of range. 7.8x zoom range. Optically stabilized. Fairly compact.

  • -

Loads of distortion. Edge performance could be better. Hood not included.

This super-zoom lens for Nikon DX format DSLRs covers a huge 7.8x zoom range, equivalent to 27-210mm on a 35mm camera. It sports silent internal focusing and Vibration Reduction.

Released in August 2013, Nikon’s 18–140mm f/3.5–5.6G DX ED VR for APS-C bodies replaces its popular 18–135mm f/3.5–5.6G zoom, adding Vibration Reduction and 5mm of reach at the long end.

The Nikon 18-135mm was the only kit lens in Nikon's lineup that didn't feature VR image stabilization; the 18-140mm updates that, and adds a small bump in telephoto distance. The 18-140mm is not significantly better than the 18-135mm, other than including this technology, but I imagine from a...

All Nikon's 18-xx mm DX lenses are excellent, so pick yours based on size, weight and price. They all take great pictures; it's just how much you want to carry and long you want to zoom. It's like cutting a sausage to length.

  • -

Won't work well on FX digital or 35mm cameras because the lens can't cover the entire image. On 35mm cameras the sides and corners are black, and FX cameras will mask-down their finder to cover less than half their usual area.

To be honest I wasn’t especially enthusiastic about the Nikkor 18-140 mm VR before the test. Its performance and its price made me change my mind, though. The lens complements nicely the line-up of other Nikon general-purpose lenses.

  • +

useful focal range,, very good resolution in the frame centre,, slight longitudinal chromatic aberration,, well-corrected spherical aberration,, low astigmatism,, silent, accurate and fast autofocus,, excellent stabilization.

  • -

significant lateral chromatic aberration at the longest focal length,, barrel distortion at wide angle and noticeable pincushion at the longer end of focal range,, lack of any accessories in the box.

This lens is a competent performer, producing decent sharpness throughout its zoom range, with low falloff and CA. However it appears to be priced quite highly, and probably doesn't perform well enough to justify being a choice as an upgrade from a similar lens, like Nikon's 18-135mm lens, that is...

  • +

Good sharpness throughout the zoom range, Lightweight, Effective VR system, Convenient zoom range

  • -

    Distortion, especially at 18mm, Price

I purchased this lens in March 2016. We had a vacation coming up and I didn't want to have to keep swapping between a 18-55 mm and a 55-200mm lens. I chose it over Nikon's 18-200 mm lens, mostly because of the weight difference between the two.I chose wisely. This lens delivers.

I used this lens for family reunion, both for close ups and group pictures. Was best of both worlds, did not have to spend time changing lenses. Was able to capture candid photos from a distance. Perfect for a variety of situations.

this lens is on my D7100 most of the time, considering the price, there is not much to complain about

  • +

great walk around lens; light and easy to handle; for a kit lens, it is sharp, with accurate focus, and the VR is a great benefit

  • -

    for a kit lens none

While being a kit lens with our Nikon body we are very pleased with the lens. It really does well handheld and even perform decent in low available light. Help sif you pick a body with low light abilities. I would recommend. This is also a great choice vs.

  • +

    Perfect all around lens

    None so far

I ordered the glass instead of my broken original Nikkor kit lens. This lens came in a white box: no guides, no references. As for quality and functioning - I did not see any difference- hope it will last for some time.

I have been using this particular lens for the past two and a half years. The lens was part of the kit which included the D7000 body.Through the years, i have been quite satisfied with the lens in terms of image quality, ease of handling, autofocus speed etc. However, the plastic ring attached to the...

I have been very happy with the purchase of this lens. I recently took a trip to Europe, and wanted a zoom lens longer than the kit lens that came with my D3400 camera, and only wanted to carry the one lens. This lens worked great, provided great photos, and is just as fast as the kit lens.
