Because of its size and weight this is a tripod or monopod type of lens. To me, the Nikkor AF-S 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR is an ideal sports lens because of its speed. But when it comes to wildlife, and unless you can get really close, an extender or a DX body should be included in the mix.
Nikon AF-S 120-300mm F2.8E FL ED SR VR is a Fixed aperture Auto Focus (AF) Telephoto Zoom lens with Optical Image stabilization and 35mm FF max sensor coverage, and it is designed to be used with F(FX) Mount cameras.

I've had this lens for about 8 months and absolutely love it. I do extensvie High School Sports so this is ideal! Even indoors for Basketball, etc it gives me that extra reach, sharpness, needed. The only drawback and I mean the only is the weight.
Excellent quality and build with super fast focusing either with Autofocus or Manually. Using on my D5. Can be handheld but a monopod is definitely beneficial. I use it almost exclusively for sports but it looks great for nature photos as well.
