I first bought a Nikon 1 V2 for digiscoping then I bought this lens. It is absolutely incredible. Even at full zoom with a steady hand you can consistently get sharp images. The camera with lens weighs very little.
when one can simply puncture a little hole in the body cap and eliminate the use of lens altogether. Nothing in this world, including pinhole lens design can be made worse than plastic Nikon glasses that leaks oil.

Light lens that can reach 800mm and take sharp photos without tripod at 1/80
Need to have steady hands. Hand movement is greatly magnified by 2.7 times at 800mm
Just purchased, have not used it much, however the shots seem fine so far
Bought this to pair with a Nikon 1 V2 specifically for shooting birds in flight. The maximum reach is 810mm at F5.6 on a V2. This combo is much lighter and smaller than a DSLR and 500 or 600mm lens but with comparable results. Very sharp lens.
My wife uses this on her new J5 and it's a real beauty.Compared to my 200-500VR, this has the same level of VR (it seems), Nano coating (+) at a fraction of the size and weight. IQ is terrific.Expensive for a "1" lens, but it's pretty remarkable in use.
I resisted buying this lens as long as I could, but in the end I knew I had to have it. If you're looking at the 4.5 70mm end of it, then it might not be right for you - but if the 5.6 300mm (810) handholdable end strikes a chord, then you need to consider it.
Terrific long telephoto (810mm equiv)! If you're getting older like I am and want to travel lighter but still have great reach, this is your lens. I have a D800/D700 outfit and the images are great, but the price is a heavy backpack.
Although the best results from this lens are achieved with good light, with the VR I have found that even in low light I can get very good shots. Even at 3-4 stops below the recommended shutter speed, I get very good results.
