Bought this to pair with a Nikon 1 V2 specifically for shooting birds in flight. The maximum reach is 810mm at F5.6 on a V2. This combo is much lighter and smaller than a DSLR and 500 or 600mm lens but with comparable results. Very sharp lens.
I have just obtained this lens and tested it at the San Diego Zoo. The lens is very well constructed and the images are amazingly sharp when hand held at 300mm (810mm equivalent), a testament to Nikon's vibration reduction (VR) technology and superior optics.
