Bought this to pair with a Nikon 1 V2 specifically for shooting birds in flight. The maximum reach is 810mm at F5.6 on a V2. This combo is much lighter and smaller than a DSLR and 500 or 600mm lens but with comparable results. Very sharp lens.
Don't get me wrong: this lens is AMAZING and I simply LOVE it. I also think that Nikon 1 concept is great: quality light weight, small, fast and quite camera with interchangeable lens. Being able to easily hold in one hand more than 800mm is not trivial at all.

Light lens that can reach 800mm and take sharp photos without tripod at 1/80
Need to have steady hands. Hand movement is greatly magnified by 2.7 times at 800mm
I use the Nikon1 system professionally in my work as a still photographer on TV productions. I own almost all the 1 Nikkor lenses. The addition of the 70-300 will let me get closer to the action than before. I've also have the FT-1 which I use with a couple larger Nikon lenses.
I first bought a Nikon 1 V2 for digiscoping then I bought this lens. It is absolutely incredible. Even at full zoom with a steady hand you can consistently get sharp images. The camera with lens weighs very little.
Great glass. Feels like good quality. Nice features and amazing shots
It is an exception lens. The image quality and dampening of movement at full zoom is surprisingly excellent. It is aggressive though. Slight rotation of the sleeve and the extent of the zoom is sharp and sudden.
An excellent telephoto lens that is not too heavy for the Nikon 1 series cameras.
Just purchased, have not used it much, however the shots seem fine so far
I think it is a very nice lens. Super sharp at 70 mm and very good in the range up to 200 mm, but 300 mm is very soft which is a big a disappointment. The tripod mount should have been included with the lens. The price for that mount is completely ridiculous.
