There are few reservations, but the pros outweigh the cons, and we enjoyed our time with it. If you’re looking for a small travel camera, definitely keep this one in mind. For $500 that includes a decent 10-30mm VR 3x zoom, this is a really good deal.

  • +

Outstanding burst mode, Solid, quality images, Compact, affordable, Good ISO performer

  • -

Weak battery life, Electronic stabilization, not optical, Single burst only last for 20 frames

If you're not a serious shutterbug, you'll appreciate the ease of using the fast-shooting Nikon 1 J5 mirrorless camera.

  • +

Incredibly fast focus and 60fps burst shooting. Tilting touch-screen LCD. Built-in flash. Quite compact. 1/16,000-second electronic shutter. Includes compact zoom lens. Built-in Wi-Fi.

  • -

Some autofocus inconsistency. Small sensor limits depth of field control. No EVF option. 4K video limited to 15fps. No mic input. Slow 1/60-second flash sync. Omits mechanical shutter. Lens shows heavy distortion when shooting Raw.

The Nikon J5 is the newest in Nikon's 1 series mirrorless camera line and is the first in the series to offer 20MP resolution. (Note: the first Nikon 1 cameras had 10MP, while the most recent, the V3, had 18MP resolution).

It looks like Nikon is heading in the right direction in more ways than one with the Nikon 1 J5.

  • +

Excellent 20 fps burst speed, Fast, accurate autofocus, particularly for facial detection, Small body, Tilting touchscreen, Sharp, colorful images, User-friendly design

  • -

Smaller sensor than most mirrorless cameras, Takes Micro SD cards

The Nikon 1 J5 is a nice mirrorless ILC that makes quite a few improvements from the Nikon 1 J4. However, it still has enough minor annoyances that add up quickly to make it lag just behind some similar mirrorless models.

  • +

Good upgrades over Nikon 1 J4, including 20.8-megapixels of resolution, Silent shutter that can record images at a speed up to 1/16,000th of a second, Little to no shutter lag

  • -

Image quality is adequate for small-to-mid-sized prints with the kit lens, but it's a little soft with large prints, Control button collection looks more like a point-n-shoot camera than an advanced model, Camera interface is improved from past Nikon 1 mirrorless models, but still requires too many...

The Nikon J5 brings the Nikon J-series cameras in line with its competition and greatly improves upon the J4. Using a 20.8-megapixel BSI CMOS CX-format sensor, the J5 takes sharp images with good dynamic range, especially at lower ISO speeds.

  • +

Photographer-friendly controls; Impressive dynamic range for its class; Very fast hybrid autofocus; Fast high-speed shooting capabilities; Tilting touchscreen display.

  • -

No hot shoe or viewfinder; Aggressive noise reduction, even at base ISO; 4K video is limited to 15fps.

Nikon is to be commended for greatly improving the photo and video quality of the Nikon 1 series. The new $500 J5 is the first camera in the lineup I wholeheartedly recommend. This is a great camera for parents with children, as it really does a great job capturing frenetic kids in motion — or other...

Very good image quality Fast, accurate burst mode Built-in flash 1080/60p video Compact and lightweight

  • -

No hot shoe for external flash Photos not as rich as those of larger-sensor competitors, weak battery life

The Nikon 1 J5 is a compact mirrorless with a unique 20 megapixels sensor which provides ultra-fast Phase-Detect autofocus, 60 FPS continuous drive and 4K Ultra-HD video at 15 FPS. The J5 packs all this into a sturdy compact body which features dual control-dials and a traditional mode-dial.

  • +

Noise-free until ISO 400, Nicely usable images until ISO 3200, Ultra-fast autofocus until very low light, Excellent metering, Virtually no blackout without Instant Review, Superb shot-to-shot speed without Review, Quick and responsive, Good LCD sharpness, Extremely quiet, Solid build quality

  • -

Limited dynamic-range, Cropped LCD coverage & not Exposure-Priority, Poor LCD visibility in bright and low light, Video recording delay, Instant Review impacts performance, Cropped field-of-view for 4K Ultra-HD video, Short battery-life

The J5 is fun to use, and it offers a good set of special effect features that will appeal to those going from a point and shoot camera to their first interchangeable lens model.

The Nikon 1 system is often underrated because of its small 1-inch CX sensor but it offers both stunning autofocus performance and continuous shooting speeds. The problem is that the series didn’t get off on the right foot.

I have had the Nikon 1 J5 for a little more than a week and I love it. I was waiting for the DL-24-85 to come out but since it has be delayed and I could wait so I bought the J5. I have been using the Nikon 7000, it's a little old but still a great camera.

I bought the silver j5 for both the 10-100 lens and retro look. This is in addition to the N1 V3 that I already own. The J5 has a newer processor and is about half the price of the V3. I was looking for more lens coverage and flexibility of having two bodies on the same Interchangeable lens system.

I like this camera because it has all the qualities of a SLR and is small like a non-SLR camera. It takes great pictures and is easy to use. The only thing is that I purchased this in November and I just saw it for a $100 less, so timing is everything for a purchase.

It's otherwise a really nice camera and I was due for an upgrade anyway so I'm going to keep it. Just disappointed about the misleading video specs.

  • +

Small and lightweight with all of the features of the larger DSLR cameras.

  • -

I bought it based on the slow motion video specs since I occasionally need to capture high speed machinery at work. What the specs fail to disclose is that the slow motion clips are limited to 3 SECONDS EACH, which makes it pretty well useless except for some novelty clips since it's really hard to...

So after a few years with my J3... I got my J5, and I love it. First, my qualms: Totally cosmetic, but, the white body does not match my white lenses. The old white is warmer, this new white is cooler, more neutral. The white 18.5 (what I use 90% of the time) looks terrible on it.

Just got this camera three days ago and I love it! I was looking for a "pocket-able" ILC; comparable to RX100 mk IV that I've been using for year and a half. Although from certainly technical capabilities standpoint RX100 has better spec, from usability stand point, J5 is...
