The Nikon AW1 is the World's first compact system camera designed for underwater use. It's waterproof to a depth of 15 metres, will survive a drop from 2 metres and is freezeproof to -10C.

  • +

Waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, freezeproof., Waterproof interchangable lenses., Bigger sensor than other underwater cameras., Built-in GPS., Good water handling characteristics.

  • -

Lens seals require annual maintenance., No built-in Wifi., No waterproof strap accessory., Corner located tripod mount.

Although the AW1 is built like a tank and survived our brutal test at sea, it’s not entirely faultless. The lack of manual controls on the body means you’ll constantly have to fight your way through the menu if you like to be in charge of frequently used settings, and in that respect it’s just like...

  • +

Incredibly strong; Fast burst rate; Superb image quality for a waterproof camera

  • -

Slippery body; No PASM mode dial; Limited waterproof lens range; Lack of hotshoe

The Nikon 1 AW1 is the first interchangeable lens camera that you can take deep underwater, but it's best left in automatic mode.

  • +

Rugged design. Waterproof to 49 feet. Integrated GPS. Good high ISO performance. Very fast burst shooting and focus. Unique shooting modes. 1080i60 and slow-motion video support.

  • -

Pricey. Controls may frustrate advanced photographers. Electronic shutter limits sync speed. External adapter required to add Wi-Fi support. Limited lens selection.

Consumers have shown that they really like compact digital cameras that combine the ease of a point and shoot with the feature set of a DSLR. They like larger sensors, enhanced performance, better image quality, and the abilty to swap lenses. The new Nikon 1 AW1 meets this consumer criteria.

  • +

Waterproof, shockproof, dustproof, and freezeproof, Neutral colors, Fills a unique product niche

  • -

Poorly placed action mode control, handgrip is less than ideal

The Nikon 1 J3 is a solid ILC, but it didn’t overwhelm us. However, take that same camera and make it waterproof and shockproof, name it the AW1, and it’s hard to not make an overwhelming recommendation. Also, there’s nothing else in the world like it.

The Nikon 1 AW1 is the first digital compact system camera that can be used for diving or other active sports without an additional protective case. Protected by a stainless steel front cover, all function elements, card slots, and interfaces are protected by sealed covers.

The Nikon 1 AW1 is the company’s most fully realized compact system camera of the past three years. It’s a rugged model that, unusually, takes really good photographs, and with consistency. Perhaps that’s something worth paying a premium. Gavin is a Macworld U.K.

  • +

Rugged qualities ensure a built-to-last construction, Sharp images

  • -

Occasional problem with inner glass of lens misting up, No eye level viewfinder

The Nikon 1 AW1 is absolutely unique. It is the only waterproof or shockproof interchangeable lens camera every made. Its relatively large 1" CMOS sensor provide it with image-quality superior to all other waterpoof cameras.

  • +

Waterproof and shockproof construction, Excellent metering, Realistic image colors, Good white-balance, Usable up to ISO 6400 for small prints, Fast Phase-Detect AF, Class-leading continuous drive, Quick shutter-lag, Ultra quiet, Sharp and crisp LCD with fast refresh rate

  • -

Above average image noise for a mirrorless, General image softness, Limited dynamic range, Limited lens selection, Wrong framing of video in image mode, Unresponsive at times, Not Exposure-Priority LCD, Very few direct controls, Short battery-life

The AW1 is an interesting camera, and one that we're very curious to try out when final production samples become available. We've had some time with a (very) pre-production sample, and although we haven't had the opportunity to actually shoot with it, our brief experience suggests that the AW1 does...

Waterproof, shockproof, mirrorless and with a 14mp sensor larger than most point-and-shoot sensors, the Nikon 1 AW1 (MSRP $799.95) is the only camera in its class. It seemed an ideal choice for a photographer with a bad case of pixelitis who was going to ride an overgrown innertube down the raging...

Camera and the rest of the package is great, the flotation wrist strap is cheap and came apart allowing the camera to drop onto concrete, good news is it only scratched the outside of the lens. The silicon cover helped save the camera.

Great camera. Very easy use seems pretty durable so far. Have not will not take it underwater. I think it would do fine tho if seals are clean and preped correctly.

Works great as a travel camera. I like using the 10mm 2.8 lens. I thought waterproofing the camera would take extra steps, but you just put on the lens. The settings are easy to use and intuitive. This camera shoots Raw, so the image quality is pretty good in low light.

The new AW1 has grabbed my attention, but falls very short for almost all recreational diving. Most dives NEVER end at 49' (unless that's the true bottom). Please give us a true, modern, digital, diving camera system that is good to 140'.

I purchased this camera before our labor day vacation and it was the best decision I could have made. We planned a 7-day Caribbean vacation I couldn't decide which camera to take. I own a J3 but I was afraid it may get water damage.
