The Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR is a good alternative to an 18-55mm kit lens; it's sharp throughout its zoom range, and affordable.

  • +

Very sharp. Vibration reduction system. Sturdy build. Attractive price.

  • -

Competing lenses feature 18-135mm zoom range. Some distortion. Softer edges at longer focal lengths.

Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at this popular budget standard zoom, which is currently offered as the kit lens with the Nikon D7000 camera.

  • +

Useful 'walkabout' zoom range, Decent optical performer, Very good value, VR performs well, Lightweight

  • -

AF noticeably slower at telephoto end of the zoom, CA at 105mm and apertures below f/11

I got mine as the kit lens with my D7000. All around I am very happy with the quality and sharpness of this lens. It covers a great range picture possibilities.

In order to do my part in the economic recovery I recently bought a new Nikon D300, a SB-900 flash and wanted to get a good all around lens to keep on it most of the time. My criteria were it had to have wide angle, a decent telephoto range and have VR (VR = Vibration Reduction) - Nikon's...

The Nikon 18-105mm Æ’/3.5-5.6 definitely raises the bar for Nikon's current lineup of kit lenses; consistently sharp, even at large apertures, with good resistance to chromatic aberration. Corner shading is prevalent, but it's not a noticeable problem.

The Nikkor AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED VR offers a nice package of a comfortable focal range, optical stabilization and very high resolution figures, excep for the longest focal length. On the downside there is rather pronounced distortion and CAs.

Back in my film days I kept a 35-105 pinned to one of my Nikkormat bodies at all times and it was my favorite rig for just about everything. People, landscape, street shots, hot rods, live musical performances.

I bought this for my wife. The price, order process, and delivery were great. The Nikkor 18-105 provided just the right flexibility she wanted to take some great shots of the grand kids this Christmas.

Over the decades I've owned lots of cameras and lenses - good, bad and indifferent. This is one of the better lenses I've owned and by far and away the best kit lens I've ever owned. I'm simply amazed at how good it is given that Nikon bundle it with their DX DSLRs for such a low price.

    Excellent for the price

Bought this to replace my go-to lens, an 18-85mm which got distroyed when dropped. I really like the longer zoom range on this lens. Performs nicely like other Nikon lenses I own. Very nice. I'm a happy camper.

I most recently shot a wedding with this lens on my Nikon d5100, along with a SB-700 Speedflash. The lens was easy to handle and gave me a wide focal range, which allowed me to use one lens and not fuss around with using a second camera or changing lenses.

  • +

    Consistent Output

  • -

    Slow Focus

Got this lens as a part of a D7000 kit since I couldn't buy a body only. The lens was very soft, had allot of barrel distortion and vignetting. The build quality was ok for a kit lens.

  • +

    Cheap, good zoom range, VR.

  • -

Plastic mount, soft, vignetting, CA, barrel distortion, slow focus in low light.

I bought this for family use, mainly for this price, weight and Image Quality. Today after some month of use, I'm very happy with it, and I've extended its use to more artistic pictures, only in certain circumstances of course.

    Zoom range, price and quality

  • -

its plastic mount. Today I can't take my nikon D90 from the lens, may be broken for that.
