We've finally got our hands on a Microsoft Surface Studio - five months after trying it out for the first time at the Adobe Max conference in San Diego. The delay in release is that it needs the Creators Update to Microsoft's Windows 10 operating system – which came out earlier this week.

That might, indeed, amount to the ultimate designers' tool. As it is, Microsoft gets admirably close with this first try.

  • +

Arguably, the nicest-looking all-in-one desktop ever designed, Excellent beyond-4K screen, Integrated power supply means no brick to hide

  • -

Expensive in every available configuration, Last-generation graphics, CPU mean you can't watch streaming 4K content or plug in a VR headset, No USB-Type C/Thunderbolt 3 ports, Surface Dial costs $99 extra, needs better traction

It's 2017, and you don't need external devices like a Wacom tablet to be a creator anymore. The Surface Studio (starting at $2,999; $4,199 as tested) isn't just a great all-in-one desktop; it's also a creative device that uses a hinge to flatten into a drafting table for art, engineering,...

  • +

Big, beautiful display, Hinge is easily adjustable, Strong speakers, Comfortable stylus

  • -

Expensive, Ports are all on the back

The Surface Studio is exactly the sort of twist on desktops you'd expect from Microsoft. It's fast and sports a gorgeous screen, but most importantly its screen-bending gimmick is actually useful. Just be prepared to spend a lot for the privilege of owning one.

  • +

Powerful for most creative tasks, Gorgeous display, Screen tilting function is genuinely useful, Responsive stylus, Dial has the potential to be very useful

  • -

Limited to mobile graphics, Expensive for the hardware you get, No upgradeability

I hope Microsoft sticks with the Surface Studio long enough to make it a little more powerful and a lot less expensive. More likely, other companies will take up that mantle, and you’ll be buying a Dell Canvas or something like it instead. (Wonder if Dell was inspired by the Studio?

  • +

As good-looking a desktop as you'll find. Everything about this screen is excellent---the drawing, the movie-watching, everything. The super-flexible hinge is basically magic.

  • -

You're paying a lot of money for middle-of-the-road specs, with no way to upgrade. This isn't quite a gaming rig, and it should be. The Dial needs more to do before it's worth $100.

For the two weeks that the Microsoft Surface Studio sat at my desk, it attracted a lot of attention. I'm an illustrator and I work with a lot of other creatives, and artists love to look at something beautiful.

Microsoft’s Surface Studio is arguably the most exciting desktop to launch in a long time. The world has been moving to more portable devices for a while now, with notebook sales overtaking desktops and never looking back.

Falling in love with the Studio is easy, and it happens at first glance. The beautiful display, elegant design, and featherweight hinge make for instant appeal. But the Studio isn’t for everyone. It’s a specific type of PC, for specific users.

  • +

Beautiful design, Simple, intuitive hinge, The best PC touchscreen, ever, Respectable performance, for an all-in-one, Solid bundled peripherals

  • -

Extremely slow hard drive, Last-generation graphics hardware, Dial is a $100 add-on, of questionable use

This machine is absolutely gorgeous and a total must-have for work and play. It’s not for sissies (40 pounds shipping weight, 28 inch screen, etc.) but it is a blast to use. I spend a lot of time reading and writing, and it makes both of those activities much easier.

The combination of Surface Studio and Surface Dial makes work fun. People talk about being “in the zone” in sports a lot...call me a nerd but I sort of feel like that working in the Studio.

The Surface Studio is indeed amazing device. I work as a photographer part time and for a SW company by day. I love that I can use this for both my "jobs" For my photography the speed of which it renders the photos together with the amazing graphics has never made my work much better.

I have always been pretty underwhelmed by computers — I considered them a means to an end but could never understand the people who got all excited about just a bunch of hardware. The Surface Studio changed all that for me. This machine is a work of art!

This computer is amazing. It's so thin and the quality is evident even from across the room. You kind of have to touch it and type on it and everything to believe it's really real because it's just so pretty to look at.

Fun idea on this first device, can't wait to see the breeding competition of Apple vs Microsoft - I think gen 2 of this will be much better - but in this model (i5) the 965m graphics chip set built into this device isn't powerful enough for the actual screen itself (which is it's main selling point)...
