Pros: looks good, worked for two-and-a-half years. Easy to set up to run Time Machine on my iMac. Cons: Noisy. Now quits spontaneously. I recently read that the average life of an external drive is about three years. I think I will try a WD or OWC drive next.
This is my second Porsche LaCie. The reason it's my second is that the first worked so well, I HAD to buy a second for mt timemachine back-up. Quick and easy set-up and a fast loader.
Works great and while you are paying a slight premium for the Porsche license, the design is great and the transfer rate is more than respectable.
Three months into the use of this backup drive and working well. No issues.
I must have about 5 of these LaCie External hard drives and love them all. My only choice for external hard drives.
I had a Lacie hard drive that I used to store pictures and videos. The drive failed so bad that nobody was able to recover the information. Now I have lost all my video edits and valued pictures. I will never buy another Lacie product.
You should know that the Disk inside the "8 TB Porsche Design Desktop Drive" is a cheap Seagate "Barracuda Compute." (entry level drive...) So, it is NOT the IronWolf Pro or the Archive NAS drive that someone else mentioned before...
2 units came yesterday, and I was not able to format either of them...however I tried. Contacted LaCie and got this answer: "We do understand that you have tried to troubleshoot the issue with no success as it prompts "Disk Part has encountered an error: The parameter is incorrect.
great product, so quiet, perfect for what I wanted
Really would give this about a 2 1/2 star rating. It can be buggy. Have experienced some problems with it that I haven't with other brands. This is my first 8 TB however, and perhaps these are not as ready for prime time (?).
