It’s fair to say that LaCie’s Rugged drives don’t look like anything else out there. The stout aluminium shell and garish rubber sleeve are certainly distinctive. We’re not certain it’s something we’d want on our desk, however.
LaCie has a strong USB 3.0 enclosure that is fast, reliable and cheap. Chris takes a look and shows us that USB 3.0 storage doesn't have to break the bank.
A fast drive at a good price, but you’ll either love or hate the design
I have an older MacPro tower (model 4,1) and I had been trying out USB 3 and was disappointed so I decided to return to FireWire 800. I also wanted something portable to take with me when I travel. I've owned LaCie Rugged drives before and have never been disappointed.
I waited for a year to pass before posting a review because I saw so many negative reviews on this drive on here. I really like this drive and use it to travel with my virtual machines for work.

Gets a little warm so don't put it under anything where it can't breathe. I accidentally put my jacket on it one day and it was really hot after that.
I have never been disappointed with a LaCie Rugged USB portable hard drive. I started buying them when they first released them... and continue to this day. And finally, 2TB at a reasonable price. I deliberated between getting this one and the faster speed version.
Faster the any other 2.5 inch FW800 drive I own. I own a LaCie Rugged (301924) and have had issues with the FW800 port not keeping a good connection. I'm curious to see how this one holds up and if it will have the same problem.

This is a great hard drive. Fast via Firewire 800. Dual ports for daisy chaining works great with my other firewire 800 drives. Write Speeds via Firewire 800: 79.8 MB/s Read Speeds 82.5 MB/s Using Black Magic Design, Disk Speed Test app. Test file size set to 5GB

non so far.
I use my Lacie everyday for photo and video backup. As a Videographer and Filmmaker it's important to backup all my files on the go. The Lacie makes it easy to use and backup all my files. I'd recommend it to anyone who is always on the go and needs a reliable and durable external hard drive.
Drive sits, unmoved, attached via USB3 to my desktop computer most of the time. It's quiet and reasonably fast for spinning disks. If it weren't for the bad sectors...

Drive worked great for a while - until recently I would have given it 5 eggs.

Three months into use, it started to develop bad sectors, eventually corrupting the virtual machine I was running off of it and causing me to have to rebuild a new VM from scratch.
It was easy to set up on my Mac Air. I will be using it for travel photography back up so wanted the heavy duty ruggedness. It is performing my Time Machine backups as well as holding my photos. I also like the transportability in my own home.
