I'm a 4th year medical student right now and travelling between hospitals for school, so at a different trail system every few weeks. The Garmin 830 is a game changer for mountain biking & makes trying new trails actually fun that you can go to a new area and ride continuously wihtout having to stop...
So far, I love the metrics and the information I get from this unit. Being able to customize the dashboards is fantastic. The only issue I’ve had so far is that sometimes when it’s charging, it turns on like I’m on a training ride. The elapse time starts running, along with a speed of about 2 mph.
I've been a longtime Garmin Edge user and have used many models from the 500 thru the 820. The new 830 experience has been awesome. Touch works with gloves and in the rain. It's quick to respond to every tap and request.
I had the Garmin 800, never really used it that much. The Garmin 830 is so much better for me. It allows me to put an address in and then it works pretty much like a car gps. It wants you to turn around if you missed a turn until a shorter route is calculated.

I bought the Garmin Edge 830 mainly so I could connect a Varia RTL515 because of the radar which lets you know vehicles are coming up behind you. But it has so many other features that I didn't really think I would use as I only ride on cities streets.
I moved from a Karoo 2 to this as a result of the software issues plaguing the K2 and sensors. I wanted a reliable head unit and the Garmin 830 delivers. its a bit smaller than the Hammerhead unit, but the transflective display is bright and very easy to read even when the sun is shining on it.
I am loving the 830. Very useful and eager to use more of its capabilities. I personally like the touch screen and have not had problems with it. One of my favorite functions is having Garmin Connect randomly select a course based off of the mileage I want to do and then sync it with the 830. Bam!
I'm very happy and impressed with this device and I feel much more secure than when I used my smartphone for navigation. You're able to pick and chose fields to be included on the display pages. eg, speed, cadence, distance to next turn, time, elevation...Great MTB feedback too like grit and flow.
