The Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L Tilt-Shift Lens is, at review time, the widest tilt-shift SLR lens made . It is also one of the highest quality (both optically and physically) 17mm lenses made.
The Canon TS-E 17mm f/4 L is an amazing lens although beginners will struggle to master its possibilities at once. When using the lens based on conventional settings it behaves pretty much like a normal ultra-wide prime lens.
For those of us that learned on a view camera... this is perfection! It will take time to learn all of the benefits and how to use a TS lens but this one is perfection. No flaws what so ever!
This lens takes some work to understand, but there's no other piece of equipment at any price that makes the near-perfect pictures this lens takes. Panoramic vistas, distortion-free architectural shots, expanded or shortened DOF shots - all from one lens.
This lens can do lots of things that others dont. Amazing for landscape, architecture and panorama. But its not a lens for beginners, changing the perspective, controlling light, focus depth all hand holding requires some training.

Sharp, sharp, sharp with a world of creative possibilities., Only lens capable of changing perspective and depth of focus in the same aperture., Shifting and stitching can make pictures as wide as 11mm equivalent without fisheye effect., Easy to focus in manual mode (do not have auto mode)

Expensive, and not easy to operate in tilt and shift mode., Camera exposure metering will not work in shift and tilt modes., Front element VERY exposed... take much care., Do not accept front filters.
This is Canon's widest tilt-shift lens, and therefore a great choice for architectural photography. You can use it to keep parallel lines parallel. You can also do the opposite: exaggerate the apparent convergence, to emphasize the height of a tall building, say.

does things ordinary lenses can't

not for beginners
Still on discovering phase (Three month use). The full manual operation is part of the "personality" you have to deal with. Shift option makes easy panoramas. The quality of the picture is the reward of time spent for composition and setup.

The best wide angle lens ever?

????
I shoot about 90% of my interiors with a 24 mm tilt shift, so I don't use the 17mm that much. But when I do need a wider shot it, it is great to have.Images are sharp. Small bit of CA and a little barrel distortion. Easy to fix.
What more can I say? Love it. Great for shifts, but I've heard that the Scheimpflug principal doesn't work quite well with this lens (which I don't use too much). If you don't know what I'm talking about, never mind... Corner sharpness is excellent. The movements are durable and smooth enough.
The lens also has an improved tilt & shift knob with an enhanced range of movement of up to +/- 6.5° and revolving lenses for better operability, it uses a circular aperture for beautiful out-of-focus areas and has an SWC lens coating to control ghosting and flare to a far greater degree than with earlier coating technologies.
The Canon 17mm F/4L is commonly used for Architecture, Landscape/scenery and more. The Canon 17mm F/4L is most used by customers who consider themselves to be a Pro photographer, Semi-pro photographer among others. The Canon 17mm F/4L is popular because customers like the following qualities of the Canon 17mm F/4L: Consistent output, Durable, Rugged, Strong construction to mention just a few.
