Canon's EF 35mm f/2 adheres to a traditional film-camera focal length while at the same time attempting to meet the demands of digital photography.....

The Canon EF 35mm f/2 Lens is a tiny, light and inexpensive Canon lens. It turns out to be a good performer as well making this lens a good value . Build quality on this 35mm prime lens is reasonable. A metal lens mount contributes to the 35 f/2's overall quality.

With this lens, Canon have produced something that performs very well indeed, but then you would expect that for the asking price. It may be questionable whether or not having image stabilisation available at this focal length really is a killer feature, as it will really only be of use for...

  • +

Good build quality, Image stabilisation, Excellent sharpness, Focuses close, Reasonably lightweight

  • -

Reassuringly expensive, No hood is supplied as standard, CA a little high at f/2 and f/22

The Canon EF 35mm f/2 is an old lens design but it's still a good one. The center resolution is very high throughout the tested aperture range. The border quality is usable at f/2 to f/2.8 and more than decent from f/4 onwards.

The Canon EF 35mm f/2 may not be the most sexy lens around but its performance is generally very solid. The resolution is very high and evenly distributed across the image field even at max. aperture.

If the lens’s price was higher (even by couple of hundred Polish zloty) and the lens had an effective autofocus with a USM motor and was at least a bit sharper at f/2.0, it could be recommended to every amateur photographer. In this situation it is very unclear and the answer isn’t obvious.

  • +

great picture resolution in the center and at the edges of the frame starting from f/4.0, small or medium level of chromatic aberration, small distortion, good performance in bright light, quite fast autofocus

  • -

weak picture resolution near open aperture, large astigmatism, too large vignetting, loud and not very effective autofocus

This lens is simply amazing. The only advantage the L lenses have on this lens is the weather sealing and that's never been a problem. The auto focus is fast, the IS helps and it's a great lens for low light.Where this lens is amazing is the sharpness, clarity and the colors it produces.

a must have "budget" lens for Fullframe or even APS users. Use it on Fullframes and it will kicks ass. Put in on an APS system, and voila..a fast normal lens. The lens performs great, an expected results from canon primes. The lens build quality is something like a plastic toy material.

small & light, pretty sharp, cheap

An essential piece of kit. I have never really liked zooms - even a cheap prime beats an L series zoom in my opinion, in terms of image quality. For example - try this lens against the 24-105 f4.0 L lens at 35mm - at f4 the images are quite obviously different in quality - the cheaper 35mm beats it...

  • +

    1) cheap, 2) reliable, 3) light and compact

  • -

    1) slowish and noisy focus, 2) not sharp at f2.0 - you need to shoot at f2.8 and up, 3) colors are slightly washed out and grey looking - not much contrast on this lens.

When this lens was released the Canon rep said they had rushed it to market so the EF line would a 35 prime: they used the same housing as for the original 50mm 1.8 and 28mm 2.8. It had no special glass (the 28mm had an aspherical element) so I didn\'t try it. My loss!

  • +

Sharp! Fast AF, fast(ish) aperture. Barrel doesn\'t rotate during focusing so you can use specialist filters easily. Small and even beats its L sibling in a few parameters, so you can save some money unless you really need that extra stop (or just like to show off pricey gear).

  • -

Buzzy Arc-Form Drive (AFD) autofocus; lens barrel extends. Some of the typical lens flaws, all in small doses however (barrel distortion, corners, shading wide open, etc.) A useless DOF scale, but does have IR mark. Not built for abuse nor carelessness. Aperture only has five blades.
