Considering the overall performance, build quality, features and reasonable pricing (reasonable is a relative term here), Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM measures up quite nicely against other long telephoto lenses available on the market.
The build quality alone qualifies the price of this lens, which appears as though it will outlast any owner! The built in hood is a neat touch that just about escapes getting in the way of filters. The only let down is the slightly sluggish (for the class of lens) autofocus.

Excellent build quality, Good contrast and colour rendition, Retractable lens hood a nice touch.

AF a little slow for class of lens, Resolution may not be up to future sensors (although pixel race has now slowed)
This is a sharp, compact and light weight, image-stabilized lens that packs a lot of performance into a relatively affordable package. There is a widespread view that the image stabilized (IS) version of the EF 300mm f/4 is not quite as sharp as the earlier non-IS view.
The Canon EF 300mm f/4L IS USM Lens is another excellent lens in the Canon L Series . While it has enough focal length to feel long, this very-well-built lens remains relatively small and light. Image quality from the 300 f/4L IS lens is excellent.
The Canon EF 300 mm f/4L IS USM is a very well-done lens, and the comparison between the cons and the pros can be the proof of it. Mind you the cons are the effect of the age – after all, the lens was launched 10 years ago.

high build quality,, quite handy, taking into account the lens’s parameters and the fact that it is equipped with IS and USM,, excellent frame centre picture quality and very good at the borders,, very low chromatic aberration,, negligible distortion,, invisible coma,, low astigmatism,, almost zero...

average work against bright light,, stabilization efficient only at the level of 2 EV.
In the marketplace the Canon EF 300mm f/4 USM L IS is probably suffering from the fact that it is "only" a 300mm lens. There are numerous zoom lenses with such a tele setting out including the stiff in-house competition from the similar priced EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 USM L IS and the new EF 70-300mm...
This lens is so fast focusing. I rented this lens last year and now I am going to add it to my gear bag. This example photo was a horrible yet amazing shot that I took with my 6D and this lens. A bird jump right out and the auto focus caught it and boom. Birdy bomb.
I bought this lens to shoot plays and sports events. It has been acceptable for sports but I cannot use during indoor plays due to the the loud IS. It is too distracting to people anywhere near me. I sent in to Canon service and they say that it "performs to factory specs". I plan on selling it.
I got this lens to replace my Canon 300 2.8 lens. I now have a Canon 200-400 f4 EX 1.4 that I primarily use for sports. The old 300 was the one I used to use for that purpose. Now I find that I still need the 300 mm size for daily news assignments, but don't want to carry the extra bulk of the 2.8.

Sharp. Lightweight - no need for a monopod. Built-in lens shade is very convenient. Not much longer than a 70-200. Easy to pack.

It has the dreaded Canon tripod/monopod ring that, in time, degrades. Never carry a lens on a removable ring with a monopod unless the camera is attached. The lens can slip out of the ring and smash into the ground. (Don't ask how I know this.)
I am still in the learning phase with this lens. So far so good. Very clear pictures...since it is a prime and not a zoom...and due to its length, I am trying to get used to running around for the perfect shot at ball games.

I bought it used and found it to be an incredibly sharp and fast lens, despite it's an F4. I first used it in a Kids "Football Practice" and the images were amazing. FAR FAR better than I ever thought. The kids look like pros. It is a please to hold without a monopod.
Fantastic lens. I love my EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM, but this fixed lens is so much crisper and better in every way at a fixed 300mm. Even with a 2x extender it's super crisp compared to my old lens.
