Tilt-shift lenses appear to be quite in fashion at the moment, although the high cost of these specialist lenses normally make it so that many photographers cannot justify the cost, despite its benefits with control of the focal plane and of distortion.

The Canon TS-E 45mm f/2.8 Tilt-Shift Lens brings tilt, shift and rotate movements to a digital (or film) SLR format camera body. In near-standard focal length, the TS-E 45 delivers excellent optical quality . First, what is a Tilt-Shift lens?

There are certain types of photography that only a very bulky monorail camera, or some field cameras, have excelled at in the past. Subjects like architecture where keystoning is a problem, or landscape and close-ups where obtaining enough depth-of-field to keep your subject in focus is critical.

Overall, this old lens delivers excellent image quality, and a good range of adjustments for a reasonable price. However, it would be nice if tilt and shift could be rotated independently, and if it could focus closer. If you can live with these shortcomings, it is still an excellent lens.

  • +

Priced reasonably, Excellent optical performance, Solid build, Good, solid controls over tilt-shift movements

  • -

Cannot rotate tilt and shift independently, Closest focus is only 40cm

I shoot architecture, so TS is useful for me. I have the whole range of Canon ts lenses and this is by far the poorest offering. The "tack sharp" reviews on here are wide of the mark.

I've owned this lens for about 4 years now, and I will occasionally use it for architecture photography, when I have the time to get the shot right (and the results are stunning) but 95% of the time I use it during weddings for interesting atmosphere and unexpected portraits results.

The possibility's are enormous if you know how to use the lens, it is not so very easy to learn. I like the 45 mm on a FF very much, just in the middle of my two favourite's , the 35 mm and the 50/55 mm. It is easy to create miniature with this lens.

Offcourse all the nice things you can do with a tilt/shift lens. 45 mm is nice on a FF camera. Very good build.

  • -

I do not like the bokeh, the only con I can think off.

I must admit this lens did suprise me a lot. Ostensibly is it versatile, but the main feature reallyis it's sharpness. Without question it satisfied all of my field photography yearnings, but it also came through perfectly with contrast and color saturation for portraits.

  • +

    Sharpness and versatility.

Could be built a little better.

I have used this lens for ten years and it is probably the single most used lens in my bag. I am a commercial photographer doing interior, lifestyle, food and product photography for magazines and advertising.

Thought I would try the lens for HDR landscapes. The chromatic aberration is so high that I get rainbows in the HDR results. Works fine for standard landscapes as long as I correct for the aberration.

It's not that sharp. The maximum aperture is just okay. There's some notable chromatic aberration, and it's hard to fix in post. Of course, there's no autofocus. For all its foibles, though, I like shooting with it.

Excellent for architectural shots!<br />First class for landscapes with extended depth of field at mid range apertures.
