The PowerShot G3 X is an excellent mega-zoom camera that’s far stronger than the company’s SX series – it makes sense since the SX is designed for casual shooters, while the G-series cameras are for advanced users.
-
+
Tremendous 24-600mm range, Excellent 20.2MP stills, High-quality 60p movies, Responsive at 5.9 fps

Expensive, No viewfinder, Poor ISO sensitivity
The Canon PowerShot G3 X couples excellent image quality with a long zoom range, but it really needs a built-in EVF.
-
+
Long zoom range. 1-inch image sensor. Tilting touch-screen display. Framing assist function. Hot shoe supports add-on EVF and Canon Speedlites. Mic and headphone connections. Built-in ND filter. Sealed against dust and moisture. Wi-Fi.

Focus on the sluggish side. Slow burst rate when shooting Raw. Takes a while to turn on. EVF is a pricey accessory.
There are lighter compact cameras out there, there are smaller compact cameras, there are compact cameras with better image quality, and there are other superzoom cameras. What there aren’t though is a camera like the G3 X, which combines all of these models into one body that’s useful from the...
The Canon PowerShot G3 X certainly has some of the same drawbacks that you find with other fixed lens, large zoom cameras, but its extremely good image quality more than makes up for those issues.
-
+
Outstanding image quality, 25x optical zoom lens, Lens moves fast throughout zoom range, Above average shutter lag and burst performance in JPEG versus other large zoom cameras, High-quality, large LCD screen that's a touch screen and that tilts up to 180 degrees, Mode dial, EV dial, and command...

-
Expensive starting price, No built-in viewfinder, Problems with camera shake when using maximum telephoto setting and hand holding G3 X, Slow burst mode performance in RAW, Bulky camera that weighs more than 1.5 pounds, On the model I tested, interior components of lens seemed to slide around when...
The Canon Powershot G3 X combines a 20 megapixels 1" CMOS sensor and a 25X optical zoom into a body the size of a typical prosumer ultra-zoom. While no small feat, Canon built the G3 X with a fully weather-sealed body, equipped it with dual control-dials, plus a wide lens-ring and added the option...
-
+
Low image-noise, Impressive retention of details until ISO 800, Good dynamic-range, Nicely saturated colors, Reliable and consistent metering, Instant shutter-lag with very short black-out, Mostly sturdy and weatherproof body, Built-in 3-stop ND filter
-
-
Strong edge softness, Yellowish cast under artificial light, Slow AF near telephoto, Slow to exit Playback, No continuous drive RAW buffer, Many controls hard to press, impossible with gloves, Poor LCD visibility in bright light, LCD hinges wiggle
The competition in the high-powered, enthusiast-grade zoom camera category continues to heat up! The Canon G3X bests its popular Sony and Panasonic rivals with a class-leading 600mm-eq. optical zoom lens.
-
+
Good overall optical performance from the 24-600mm eq. lens; Very good image quality and high ISO performance for this class, especially with RAW; Lots of external controls; Comfortable grip; Shoots 1080/60p video; Includes both mic and headphone jack, Focus peaking for video; Clean HDMI.
-
-
No built-in EVF; Mediocre AF speeds; Sluggish burst rate with RAW/RAW+JPG and with servo AF; Below average battery life; No 4K video unlike competitors.
Compact cameras with large image sensors typically pack fixed focal length lenses. Think Fujifilm’s X100T or the Leica Q. Meanwhile, cameras with incredibly long zooms are generally paired with smaller sensors.
-
+
Comfortable design; large, tilting display; versatile focal length; large image sensor.
-
-
No viewfinder; lacks 4K; slower than competition; pricey; sub-par battery life.
I'll just mention the biggest drawback that you'll find in my Canon PowerShot G3 X review right out of the gate: If you cannot make yourself pay a nearly four figure price for a fixed lens camera, then you probably will have little desire to consider this camera.

Canon's latest point-and-shoot is long on zoom, but can it catch the competition?
I was concerned about previous reviews about slow focus times, but so far I have shot over 500 photos with no issue. Half were wild life where maximum zoom was required, half were made at a Lacrosse game.
I took this camera to Mexico and got great photos, including nights (with flash) at the celebration of the Day of the Dead). Unfortunately for me, the price seems to have dropped by $100 since my purchase in September

Excellent zoom range, Good Image Quality, Good Image Stabilization, Great Zoom, Large Clear LCD

No Viewfinder, Price too high, Short Battery Life
I've had this camera for a month, and I have since taken over 1000 photos of tall buildings. Its wide angle of view and weather sealing make this a superior camera. My first for the Powershot series and a Canon.
The size is fine...not too big for a small bag, and certainly smaller than any competition with the lens/sensor sizes. The lens is amazing...sharp everywhere....this is where Canon outdoes competitors. The IS is as good as I'd expect. The IQ ...dandy ..
I have had the G3X since July and have used on holiday(wild life photos) fantastic zoom but tricky to hold and maintain focus, purchased a mono pole and this has sorted the problem!
Mit der G3X habe ich endlich eine Kamera gefunden die mich bei meinen Wanderungen begleitet und dabei alles bietet was ich benötige vom Weitwinkel über den großen Zoombereich bis hin hin zum sehr guten Telemakro.
A great little camera - I use it when I cannot take my full frame into a concert or other event. The lens is a lot higher profile than that of the G15, but the increased sensor size and zoom are worth the bigger camera.
