For a compact camera, the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II has a large image sensor; in fact, it is slightly larger than the sensor found in Micro Four Thirds cameras. The G1 X II offers a moderate resolution of 13 megapixels, with maximum resolution in images with an aspect ratio of 4:3.
The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II has some solid capabilities and a standout lens, but the overall experience just doesn't live up to its price.
-
+
With a couple of exceptions, the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II is very well designed with a functional shooting layout.
-
-
The camera is relatively slow and given the price, the photo quality should be better. Also, the grip isn't big enough to maintain a solid hold.
Just as we gave props for ISO handling, Canon gets an overall cheer for the newly designed PowerShot G1 X Mark II. It is a far superior camera to the original (which should be avoided in favor of this model). Now, for the $800 question, should you buy the Mark II?

+
Excellent stills, quality videos, Much improved performance, Very solid feel
-
-
No built-in viewfinder, Screen has reflectivity issues in bright sunshine, Videos only 30p
TThe Canon Powershot G1 X Mark II is a very good advanced fixed lens camera, creating impressive images with its 1.5-inch image sensor. It's a fast performer in many shooting situations, and it has a host of advanced features and settings, including a fast f/2.0 lens.

+
Image quality is outstanding most of the time, Terrific camera for portrait or product photography, Allows recording in JPEG or RAW, Camera works quickly most of the time, Fast f/2.0 lens, Solidly built camera, Tiltable LCD works well for use with a tripod, Offers touchscreen LCD, Uses same field of...

Very heavy for a fixed lens camera, Small optical zoom capability at 5x, Battery life is poor, Camera's performance is slow when using flash or in low light, Design of step ring on lens is poor and has some responsiveness issues, Autofocus sometimes struggles in scenes with no obvious subject or in...
The PowerShot G1 X Mark II is an enthusiast compact whose fast lens and large sensor allow it to produce impressive photos in both bright and low light. Its well-built body offers three dials, and numerous controls can be customized.
-
+
Very good photo quality, Fast lens with good focal range, capable of very shallow depth-of-field, Solid build quality, with two grips to choose from, Three dial operation: two 'clicky', one smooth, 3-inch tilting LCD flips up 180 degrees for self-portraits, Highly customizable (buttons, dials, and...

Considerable shadow noise in Raw, Abrupt highlight clipping, Program line's tendency to use wide apertures can lead to unintentional background blur, Inner lens ring can be frustratingly unresponsive, AF system can struggle in low contrast / low light situations, No manual focus or exposure...
Boasting a wider, longer, brighter lens than its predecessor, and a faster DIGIC 6 image processor, Canon aimed to fix some of the trouble spots seen in the original G1 X. Autofocus performance has been improved as has macro shooting, but we found no real net improvement in image quality over the...

+
Wider, longer, faster lens than predecessor, with good overall optical quality; Faster AF performance; Closer macro shooting; Built-in Wi-Fi and NFC with remote shooting; Decent JPEG burst performance; Excellent build quality.
-
-
Localized flare issue when wide open; No real net improvement in image quality over predecessor; Slow burst mode when shooting RAW files; Poor battery life; Video quality is so-so (not like Canon DSLRs).
Canon’s G-series has been around for a long time — a check on Wikipedia reveals that the first PowerShot G1 Âcamera was released as far back as 2000. BIG LENS: The G1X Mark II has a larger, brighter lens than its predecessor, which is better for low-light work.
-
+
Good build quality; excellent images at high ISO settings; extensive control options.

Pricey.
Much has changed in the fixed-lens camera segment since Canon introduced the original G1X. We saw the rise of cameras with all sorts of added features like Wi-Fi and NFC which allow them to play nicely with smart devices that many consumers have grown fond of.
Each camera has its own set of strengths and weaknesses. The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark II , ( ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ) ( review ) is quite clearly superior in low-light conditions due to its larger pixels and faster lens.
The Canon PowerShot G1X MII is the perfect addition for the enthusiast or experience photographer looking to add a high performance, compact DSLR-like camera to their kit. With DSLR-like image and function quality this camera will appeal to people looking to add to something smaller and zippier to...
I currently use Canon SLR gear and lens, but have become too old to carry all the weight, so I was looking for a point and shoot with a large sensor, shoots in RAW and has full manual control. The G1X works perfect.
Very versatile camera at a reasonable price. It takes very good shots in a group photo. Each person is clearly in focus and there is good resolution. For a camera without interchangeable lenses I recommend it. No need to carry expensive bulky lenses.
I bought the G1XII nearly 2 years ago and it continues to impress with the photos it delivers. Yes, it is only 12.8 megapixels. Yes, it is slow to focus at times. Yes, the controls are not handy at times.
We have two Canon digital cameras and have had good luck with them. This one has advanced features that our previous models lack such as WIFI and NFC as well as larger CMOS sensor. Once again Canon received the top rating in the advanced point and shoot category in a major consumer magazine.
There is no doubting the light metering and sensor quality, the images this camera can produce are great - and RAW mode too! Low and natural light photography is great with it. The user definable dial on the lens body is also fabulous.
This was one of my best purchases so far this year...I am still trying to discover all the wonderful features this camera offers....I had researched this item and my only regret is that I had not purchased this camera earlier
