The new Canon G1 X quite an extraordinary camera. It has thecompact body of a high-end point and shoot camera with a large CMOS 18.7x14mm sensor delivering 14 MP. This sensor is larger than Micro Four Third sensors (17.3x13 mm) in Panasonic or Olympus CSC cameras.

7.2/10

The Canon G1 X goes boldly where no PowerShot has gone before. It delivers top-notch images with a big 1.5-inch sensor, but the viewfinder and AF acquisition leave something to be desired.

  • +

Excellent images, video, Very good at high ISO, Manual controls

  • -

Costs as much as a DSLR, Slow AF acquisition, Only 77% VF coverage

The G1 X is an excellent camera for some but not for everyone. The camera gives you great image quality and a versatile zoom range in a small package without the need to carry a stack of lenses.

  • +

Good detail and resolution at low sensitivities, Excellent high ISO performance, very clean output with good detail, Compact dimensions for sensor size and lens range, Intuitive user interface with good number of external controls and customizability, Excellent build quality with metal body and...

  • -

Very slow continuous shooting for this class of camera, no control over parameters in High-Speed Burst scene mode, Comparatively slow AF, slowing down further in macro mode, Limited close focusing capabilities require frequent switches to macro focus mode, Built-in zoom lens is relatively slow,...

The Canon PowerShot G1X is a compact digicam designed to produce the highest image quality possible. Made up of dSLR quality parts and features, the only thing holding it back are some focusing and pricing issues. Read more in our Full Conclusion .

Smart Auto handled lighting situations better than program mode, Various manual exposure control options, Dedicated Video Capture Button is always ready to record, HS system and new image sensor produce amazing image quality, Incredibly low image noise levels at all ISO levels, DIGIC 5 processor...

Macro focus is almost nonexistent with a minimum focus range of only 7.9-inches at wide angle, The AF system did a lot of focus hunting / searching and failing to achieve focus in various lighting conditions, Optical viewfinder is not reliable where framing is concerned, Battery Life is not very...

For some time, the market is demanding solutions that make live compactness and image quality, or small bodies and large sensors. The buoyancy of the market of mirrorless is the confirmation.

  • +

Robustness and ergonomics, Display fully adjustable, Thread on the lens that allows you to mount filters, Image quality, Performance at high ISO.

  • -

Tripod mount is not in line with the target and blocking the battery compartment and memory card, Viewfinder really of little use, Autofocu Dancer, Macro not sufficient for tightly frame, Optical brightness is not enough for a good detachment of the plans.

The Canon Powershot G1 X is the first G-series to use a large sensor, somewhere between a 4/3 sensor and an APS-C one. The 14 MP one fitted in the Canon G1 X gives superb image quality, making it produce the best image quality among fixed-lens cameras.

  • +

Excellent image quality, Low image noise, Good image sharpness, Good colors with tweak, Great WB in bright-light, Quick shutter-lag, Built-in 3-step ND filter, Intuitive interface, Durable build quality

  • -

Generally sluggish AF, Glacial AF in low-light, Some over-exposure, Bluish cast in low-light, Slow shot-to-shot speed, 1s video record delay, Low battery-life, No AEB in M mode, Optical tunnel viewfinder partly obstructed by lens

The PowerShot G-series has always been the flagship, 'serious' digital compact camera from Canon, and the latest G1 X represents the best of the best of Canon's digital compact cameras.

  • +

Superb image clarity, Excellent low-noise performance, Excellent image stabilizer, Well-designed controls

  • -

Sluggish response, Not able to shoot macro

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, this is not a camera you should buy unless you already own a DSLR. Canon reps themselves told me that if you’re debating between the G1 X and, say, a Rebel DSLR, you should buy the latter — having more lenses and more versatility is key, and the G1 X’s...

  • +

Excellent pictures and video, Fast performance, Plenty of manual control

  • -

Poor autofocusing performance, Big and bulky, Expensive

There’s little doubt that the Canon Powershot G1 X can produce higher quality images than any other compact digicam. In fact it can produce images which equal (or beat) those from many DSLRs and mirrorless cameras with interchangeable lenses.

The title says it all: this is the best camera I have every owned and I would recommend it to anyone who wants superb pictures and who is willing to take the time (and make the effort) to learn how to use it.

  • +

Superb picture quality under almost all conceivable conditions., Fast and easy changing of settings., Wonderful, extremely useful, articulating LCD screen (and I wouldn't want to buy a camera without one)., Lightweight for its size and capabilities.

  • -

Macro use requires auxiliary lens., Snap-on lens cap., No filter threads engraved in lens housing (requires filter adapter)., Auto focus not as quick as on some models (but adequate under most conditions)., You must print the owner's manual (necessary!)

Overall, I'm VERY happy with the G1X.. the IQ was the main reason I bought it... I wanted something I could take when I didn't want to carry my 7D and big lenses...something I could stick in my jacket pocket and not be weighed down. Something that would shoot in RAW and give me great results...

  • +

The image quality from the camera is phenomenal for a camera of this size - the images are very close in quality to the ones I take with my 7D - which cost SUBSTANTIALLY more money. It has very good high-ISO performance, again, rivaling the 7D.

  • -

There are a few weaknesses that may impact your decision to buy it (or they may not)... one, the optical viewfinder is very unfortunate. It's a cheap looking and feeling viewfinder that crops about 30% off of your actual viewing area that would make it into an image. You're better off using the LCD.

My dad loves photography. He has a ton of cameras and every time I go visit him there is a new camera there waiting for me. This time around, he had bought a Canon Power Shot G1X camera which I had the pleasure of testing out exhaustively for close to two weeks.
