We certainly got some great shots using a 55mm marco. Longer shots are more difficult to achieve with the lights causing hotspots if care isn't taken, so these lights aren't necessarily ideal for beginners.

Limited rotation around the lens, flash mount too easily detached from the lens, price
The Canon Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX Flash is an extremely flexible and very easy to use macro flash . As the name implies, the Canon Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX Flash is primarily suited to macro flash photography.
This is a must for me for macro photography. The only downfall is that you need to buy a 67 macrolite adapter to attach it to the 100mm macro L lens, and then also a 58mm lens cap to keep the lens covered when the twin flash is attached but not in use.
I have had this flash unit for 5-6 years and have never had a problem. I chase bugs and therefore handhold. Would be impossible without this flash. I have Kirk and RRS flash brackets for my 580 and 600 but they are bulky and hard to maneuver in tight spots. And the bracket set-up is heavy.
I know this is a lot of money for a flash only used for macro. But you can't take serious macro images without it. I use it on my Canon 180mm macro.(A superb lens by the way)There is no problem with vignetting with the required adapter ring. Buy the Canon adapter ring specifically for this flash.
I do a lot of macro photography of small animals. This requires flash. Twin-flash units like this are great as you can control lighting for really attractive results. I used to use a Nikon R1 with an SB800 as controller.

heavy/large, cannot keep filter on 105 macro lens
occasionally need diffusion caps to soften the lignting. that would be true with any flash system. the metering is excellent and consistent.

Es una magnífica herramienta para macrofotografía, el mejor del mercado. Las exposiciones con el EF 50 compact macro y el EF 100 macro USM son, simplemente, perfectas.

Grande, Pesado, Caro!!!!!!
I like the ring light and looking forward to the results.
Fits nicely and gives a much more natural, softer lighting when flash is used which begs the question, why don't camera manufacturers design their flashes with a diffuser from the get go?
I've used the MT24 on the 5D2 and the 5DsR for the past few years. It works well on the MP-E 65, the 180 Macro and the Zeiss 100 macroplanar. Adjustment options with angling light, ratio control, rotation, are all working fine.
If you are looking for a way to improve your macro shots of small moving subjects in less than ideal light, this is effective. The variations for directing your light is endless although, I have found that turning the heads completely inward produces a very unpleasant haze.
