With a 30MP sensor, fantastic color reproduction and on-sensor autofocus, the EOS R can produce some beautiful photographs with pinpoint-accurate focus. But it's Canon's first mirrorless full-frame camera, and in many ways, it shows.

General and social photography, casual video shooters and those looking for either a backup body for their full-frame Canon glass or are looking at building up a collection of new RF lenses.

“Canon's first mirrorless camera sets the stage for a very bright future.”

  • +

5D Mark IV sensor in a smaller body, Fantastic EVF, Lots of customization, Great autofocus, Works with older lenses via adapters

  • -

No in-body stabilization, Burst rate limited to 5 fps with continuous AF, Single SD card slot

The Canon EOS R is a full-frame mirrorless camera that both impresses and disappoints. On the plus-side it delivers good-looking photos, has a promising new mount with two exotic lenses at launch, great video autofocus, and the best performance from adapted EF lenses on a mirrorless camera.

There’s a lot to like about the Canon EOS R, including its fast and accurate autofocus system; excellent image quality; tough but comfortable build featuring one of the best grips in the full frame mirrorless camera category; and Canon’s top-notch color science, which is critical for serious...

Even when it was launched, the Canon EOS R looked conservative rather than groundbreaking. It's a great proof of concept, with fantastic features such as the new Control ring and M-Fn Bar, and seamless compatibility with existing EF lenses.

  • +

Great control customization, 5,655(!) focus positions, Fully articulating screen, M-Fn Bar

  • -

No in-body stabilization, Cropped 4K video, Single SD card slot, M-Fn Bar

The EOS R is Canon’s first attempt at a full-frame mirrorless camera, and its release heralds an exciting future for the company based around the new RF lens mount. As a stand-alone camera, the EOS R turns in a solid performance that can at times impress yet on aggregate it comes up short.

In the Canon EOS R, we are looking at the future and I like what I see. In addition to being packed full of the latest technology and features, the EOS R comes with a new lens mount, the first new Canon full frame lens mount in over 30 years.

The title says I switched to the EOS-R “for this”. Well, what is “this”? THIS is a mirrorless camera that I really enjoy. THIS is color that I prefer over other cameras and THIS is about the lenses as well, that are unique, and beautiful in build and performance.

The Canon EOS R is a camera we’ve all been waiting to see for several years now. It’s a full frame mirrorless camera with a 30.3MP sensor, 4K video capture, and an all-new lens mount. So how does this new camera and system handle the hype and anticipation that’s been building for so long?

I like the Canon EOS R. In fact, I bought one. But I’ll be honest, I bought it partially because I need to review more gear in Canon mount, and while I’ve used metabones adapters, they’re not always the best choices vs Canon’s own option. However, I believe in this lens system.

Solid build as typical Canon EOS series though feels less solid possibly due to the decreased weight. Wish this had stabilization and perhaps should have waited for the next upgrade, but since all my lenses have built in stabilization it hasn't been a problem, though the focus doesn't seem to do as...

I avoided this camera because of the single card slot. I also read many of the mediocre reviews and thought I wouldn't get much use out of this camera so I didn't buy it. Well the price recently came down and I also want to purchase the R5.

I love it. A lot of negative reviews have been issued across the Internet for this camera for its feature set, but it really is excellent at what it does. My main complaint is that it does not have in-body image stabilization, but I can live without it.The image quality is outstanding. Period.

I upgraded from a Canon 80d to the Canon EOS R. First I want to say that the image quality and color science is several steps higher than the 80d and for that I am well pleased.

Easy to figure out and one of the cool features, at least for a wedding on the R5 is the very quiet shutter. Also they focus really well in low lights!I did a wedding a couple of weeks ago and used the R and Ra. I have one this weekend and will use the R5 and R.Great cameras!

I have had this camera for several weeks and I love it! This is my fifth Canon digital camera and it is the best one of them all. My previous camera is an 80D which I love too, and will still use in certain situations, like when I want extra reach with a telephoto lens.

I upgraded to the Canon EOS R in March 2019 from the Canon EOS 60D as my first so called full frame body (ignoring all the years I shot 35mm film), so my opinion is based on a comparison with my trusty EOS 60D which I loved to bits and not with other similar FF cameras, although I looked hard at the...

Ive used the 20D, 40D 6D, 6Dll, 7D, 7d II. This camera is different. Do not jump in and start changing camera parameters. Some of these controls are not visible. First, Google Rudy Winston and Canon EOS R on YouTube. I found 3 videos. Read his walkthrough of the camera. Theres a lot to understand.

After having it a couple of weeks, I love this camera! Images are incredible and I really like the touch screen. The Electronic View Finder is very bright and it's so comfortable to hold.
