All in all, the Canon EOS R is one of the most thorough first-generation cameras we’ve ever used. If you’re coming from the world of DSLRs, there will absolutely be a learning curve, but if you have a little patience and are willing to approach your workflow slightly differently, the experience will...

5D Mark IV sensor in a smaller body, Fantastic EVF, Lots of customization, Great autofocus, Works with older lenses via adapters

  • -

No in-body stabilization, Burst rate limited to 5 fps with continuous AF, Single SD card slot

Canon's first full-frame mirrorless camera, the EOS R, offers strong image quality and autofocus, but is held back by its ergonomics and video system.

  • +

Proven 30MP full-frame sensor. Vari-angle touch LCD. Big, sharp EVF. 8fps continuous capture. Big shooting buffer. Broad lens compatibility via adapter. Unique native lenses.

  • -

M-Fn bar tricky to use effectively. Uncomfortable rear dial. Omits focus joystick. No in-body stabilization system. Inconsistent metering. Single memory card slot. No PC sync socket. 4K video is heavily cropped.

The EOS R is Canon’s first full-frame mirrorless camera and heralds an all-new lens mount system. As the first batch of lenses show, it’s loaded with potential to produce beautiful, sharp images and video. The camera itself is a bit disappointing, though.

  • +

Wide choice of adapters for Canon DSLR lenses, Accurate Dual Pixel autofocus, Excellent image quality, Fully articulating touchscreen, Bulletproof body and big grip

  • -

4K video crippled by 1.8x crop and max 30 fps, No in-body stabilization, Wonky touchpad instead of joystick, Single UHS II card slot

Make no mistake, the EOS R is not only a very good first generation product, it's a very good camera. Period. It's more than capable of producing sharp, professional photographs with more resolution than the Sony A7 III and Nikon Z6 for only a few hundred dollars more.

  • +

Excellent image quality, A lot of 5D Mark IV parts in a $2,300 body, Terrific ergonomics & menus, Easy to customize (especially with the control ring), Dual-Pixel CMOS AF, Vari-angle display flexibility, External 10-bit video recording with C-log, STUNNING RF LENSES

  • -

Heavily cropped 4K video (Almost Micro FourThirds), No 1080p 120fps slow motion, Less dynamic range than Sony & Nikon, Missing dual card slots, Lacks IBIS, EyeAF & AF-C need improvement, Multi-function bar is a fun idea, but doesn't quite work

The EOS R is Canon's first full-frame mirrorless camera, and with a proven sensor and great color output, it's capable of producing really great photographs. But then again, there are many full-frame cameras on the market today that are capable of producing really great photographs, so it's the...

The Canon EOS R is a full-frame mirrorless camera that both impresses and disappoints. On the plus-side it delivers good-looking photos, has a promising new mount with two exotic lenses at launch, great video autofocus, and the best performance from adapted EF lenses on a mirrorless camera.

There’s a lot to like about the Canon EOS R, including its fast and accurate autofocus system; excellent image quality; tough but comfortable build featuring one of the best grips in the full frame mirrorless camera category; and Canon’s top-notch color science, which is critical for serious...

A great first step for Canon towards the right direction. Worth the pickup with the mount adapter if you have other Canon lenses. It would probably be worth waiting to see what the future brings for the EOS R.

(1) Overall faster performance than my 5DMIV (2) Very good implementation of EVF - sharp, bright, realistic (3) IS lenses perform much better here than in both my 5DMIV and M6 (4) Superb ergonomics; perfect for all-day shoot when mated with the EF35mm f/2 IS USM and solid for all-around photograhy...

The camera is a fantastic camera. It feels like holding my 5D III and it is just lighter then my 5D III. The AF system is great and can use a firmware to make it superb and outsanding.

I love this camera ... an upgrade from the 7D I've been using. I've used it with my Canon F4 70-200 and F4 400 (rented) using the Canon adapter ring ... and the native RF 24-100 lens. The wifi and usb connectivity that I wanted stinks and I have zero interest in troubleshooting that.

Two issues I have encountered are slow and clunky Auto Focus. Near impossible with Birds. I set my focus point and when in view finder it walks around on it's own. For Landscapes and Stills it produces a great picture. Canon has to update the Auto Focus, hopefully future Firmware will address this.

I am rapped by this camera. I have been waiting for quite some time for Canons first Full Frame Mirrorless to arrive. I shoot Canon bodies with Tamron lenses. I am a little disappointed that 2 of my 6 lenses are not compatible but I expected my next purchase to be an RF mount lens anyway.

Despite the fact that certain things don‘t fullfill everyones need, for me it is a perfect step up from the 5D3. A few things still have to be sorted by FW update. The EVF is fantastic compared to the EVF of the Olympus EM-1 Mk.2 The fully articulated screen and the adapters are far superior to any...
