An overall excellent camera, but one that fails to capture the best-in-class prize for image quality.

  • +

The Canon EOS 70D's new sensor delivers excellent autofocus performance and the camera itself is quite fast. Its design is reasonably streamlined and the feature set appropriately tailored to the target market as well.

  • -

The image quality doesn't overly impress for this price class, and certain aspects of the design -- notably single card slot, hard-to-control multicontroller and the Wi-Fi/movie mode conflict resolution -- are annoying.

The Canon EOS 70D is a first-rate 20.2MP DSLR and gives one of our favorites, the Nikon D7100, a very good run for the money. We really like the operability and still quality of both. However, the Canon really trumps Nikon on the video front. Canon’s new Dual Pixel AF technology is a real winner.

  • +

Excellent enthusiast DSLR, Dual Pixel AF for movies a major improvement, High-quality stills, great videos

  • -

No AF Assist lamp on body, Wi-Fi implementation needs help, Bulky, but that comes with the territory

If you are looking for a DSLR that can shoot amazing video with seamless AF, look no further than the Canon 70D! It will not disappoint.

  • +

Good still image quality, Good ISO noise performance, Latest generation processing engine and technology, Touchscreen monitor offers quick control response, Exceptional DSLR video performance due to continuous AF

  • -

72 dpi still image output requires resizing for printing, Touchscreen monitor collects fingerprints and smudges, impairing legibility in bright conditions, Camera seems to lose highlights to a higher degree than the 60D at default settings

The long-awaited Canon 70D comes packed with a groundbreaking new technology -- Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF system -- that provides on-chip phase detection autofocus at every single pixel.

  • +

Dual Pixel CMOS AF delivers full-time continuous autofocus (with phase detect at every pixel in framing area) for video and Live View still shooting; Full HD (1080p) video recording with pro-level features and quality; Improved resolution and good high ISO performance; Excellent Wi-Fi remote...

  • -

Image quality only improved slightly over 60D; Dynamic range still lags behind competing models; May not feature enough upgrades to convince people to step up from 60D., Image quality hasn't improved much since the 60D, though added resolution helps produce larger prints, Sensor's dynamic range is...

Offering most of what an enthusiast looks for in a digital SLR, the Canon 70D takes it a step further with excellent live view and movie mode autofocus. Good continuous shooting performance and Wi-Fi simply serve to sweeten the deal.

  • +

Dual Pixel AF makes movie and live view modes more usable, Good heft without being too large to hold, High ISO shots are quite usable, even above ISO 6400, Excellent LCD and responsive touchscreen, Special coating minimizes fingerprint smudges from touchscreen use, Articulated LCD for shooting from...

  • -

Dual Pixel AF does not allow tracking autofocus while shooting continuously, Relatively small viewfinder, LCD blacks out completely during continuous shooting in live view, AF illuminator integrated into flash (must have flash engaged to use it), Complicated Wi-Fi setup, Movie mode disabled when...

The Canon EOS 70D really is the "game changer" that Canon claims. Its new sensor and DIGIC 5+ processor really take it to new heights with outstanding performance, image quality and new video capabilities. It is well worth the money for a first or upgraded dSLR camera.

  • +

iAuto shooting mode is accurate and easy in all situations, Overall image quality is excellent, Live View AF is much faster than other dSLR cameras, Continuous AF works great for stills and video, 3.0-inch touch LCD is one of the easiest and most accurate to use, Outstanding shooting performance,...

Higher ISO settings were still very noisy, Just one memory card slot, Some aberrations in high contrast areas

If you're in the market for a DSLR that excels in both still photography and video recording, Canon's EOS 70D is the camera for you. Color and detail are excellent. This DSLR's responsive and accurate autofocus system lets you precisely follow moving subjects, and easy-to-reach controls let you...

  • +

Fast autofocus and tracking in video and live view, Easy one-handed operation for essential settings, Wi-Fi equipped for photo transfers, remote control, Very sharp images and accurate color

  • -

Tedious wireless and white balance controls, Somewhat bulky

The Canon EOS 70D was an amazing release by Canon. Its update, the Canon EOS 80D, is a great camera but it feels like the company didn’t do enough to make it stand out on its own with new features. Still a great camera for beginners, but are you willing to pay the extra cash to have one?

In many respects, the Canon EOS 70D is an amazing camera. The flurry of 7 fps, with infinite buffer (or almost) and continuous autofocus, it is a strength indisputable, especially when you consider that the scanned files are 20 megapixels.

  • +

Excellent image quality, Excellent AF (also in Live View), 7 fps burst, Swivel touch screen, Good video mode.

  • -

Placement of some keys improved, One SD slot, No AF-assist lamp.

The EOS 60D was, in some regards, a step back from its EOS 50D predecessor. It appeared that Canon was better slotting the 60D below the EOS 7D and above the EOS Rebel models. The 70D loses almost no 60D functionality or features and adds considerably to them. You can check out the Canon EOS 70D vs.

The 70d is a problem camera. Mine has locked up several times and win not reset correctly. Reviews show that the 70d has BIG problems which caused so many problems for photographers. I switched over from Sony Alpha and spend thousands on canon gear and several lens.

My son shot a feature length documentary with this camera and it came out fantastic. This is a great starter or "state 2" set for an up-and-coming film maker.

Upgraded from a tried/true 50D, bought this ~3-month old camera used. Have had it myself for ~1.5 months, and still so much to learn. The camera is top-notch, very sturdy and good feel to it. Would recommend this powerful camera. Many detailed reviews out there...

I upgraded from a Canon T3i and couldn't be happier. The touch screen and video was never a factor in my purchasing of this camera but now I find these features indispensable.

  • +

What I like about it. Fast focusing, 19 cross type focus points. Very nice ISO performance. Touch screen is awesome. Sturdy build quality and nice ergonomics. The video quality is excellent combined with STM lenses. Battery perfomance is very good.

No headphone jack, not a deal breaker.

Purchased the Canon 70D on sale, and at the best price anywhere by a few hundred dollars. I had researched and knew which camera I wanted, and waited for someone to lower the price before making the purchase. Optics Planet was that store.
