The Canon EOS 70D is a first-rate 20.2MP DSLR and gives one of our favorites, the Nikon D7100, a very good run for the money. We really like the operability and still quality of both. However, the Canon really trumps Nikon on the video front. Canon’s new Dual Pixel AF technology is a real winner.

  • +

Excellent enthusiast DSLR, Dual Pixel AF for movies a major improvement, High-quality stills, great videos

  • -

No AF Assist lamp on body, Wi-Fi implementation needs help, Bulky, but that comes with the territory

The Canon EOS 70D delivers the smoothest Live View focus we've seen in a traditional D-SLR, but it can struggle to lock that focus in dim light.

  • +

Smooth video autofocus. Articulating touch-screen LCD. Pentaprism optical viewfinder. Quick focus in most situations. 7fps continuous drive shooting. Lots of physical controls. Vertical grip add-on available. 1/250-second flash sync speed. Integrated Wi-Fi.

  • -

Live View autofocus struggles in low light. Only one SD card slot. Lacks built-in GPS. No PC Sync socket. 1080p video is limited to 30fps. Cannot record video when Wi-Fi is enabled.

There’s no doubt that live view use (as well as movie capture) is becoming more widespread amongst DSLR users. Until now though its always felt like a bit of compromise in use, with most systems offering a relatively clunky user experience that’s easily overshadowed by system cameras in this area.

  • +

Dual Pixel AF sensor delivers the best AF performance for a DSLR during live view; 19-point AF system is excellent; High quality touchscreen interface; Image nosie performance; Solid constructino; Wi-fi connectivity

  • -

Creative filters only active during live view (and JPEG only); AWB can deliver too neutral results on some occasions.

The big story is of course Dual Pixel CMOS AF, but it's refreshing to find Canon not neglecting the traditional aspects of the camera. Indeed, after effectively down-grading the xxD series from semi-pro to mid-range with the introduction of the 60D, Canon has listened to feedback and aimed the 70D...

  • +

Great image quality, high resolution and low noise., Best continuous AF for movies on the market., 1080p movies with compression and timecode options., Large viewfinder with on-demand guides., Fully articulated touchscreen display., Fast continuous hooting at 7fps.

  • -

Live View AF only suitable for slow moving subjects., Slow shot-to-shot times in Live View., No built-in GPS nor supplied means to sync with log., No in-camera panorama stitching., Smartphone app can't transfer original image size., EOS Utility need a wireless LAN to operate wirelessly.

4 November 2013

Announced in July 2013 and available in the marketplace this past September, the EOS 70D is Canon’s latest addition to its midrange DSLR line, targeting “advanced amateur photographers and photo hobbyists”.

  • +

Good still image quality, Good ISO noise performance, Latest generation processing engine and technology, Touchscreen monitor offers quick control response, Exceptional DSLR video performance due to continuous AF

  • -

72 dpi still image output requires resizing for printing, Touchscreen monitor collects fingerprints and smudges, impairing legibility in bright conditions, Camera seems to lose highlights to a higher degree than the 60D at default settings

11 October 2013

Offering most of what an enthusiast looks for in a digital SLR, the Canon 70D takes it a step further with excellent live view and movie mode autofocus. Good continuous shooting performance and Wi-Fi simply serve to sweeten the deal.

  • +

Dual Pixel AF makes movie and live view modes more usable, Good heft without being too large to hold, High ISO shots are quite usable, even above ISO 6400, Excellent LCD and responsive touchscreen, Special coating minimizes fingerprint smudges from touchscreen use, Articulated LCD for shooting from...

  • -

Dual Pixel AF does not allow tracking autofocus while shooting continuously, Relatively small viewfinder, LCD blacks out completely during continuous shooting in live view, AF illuminator integrated into flash (must have flash engaged to use it), Complicated Wi-Fi setup, Movie mode disabled when...

The Canon EOS 70D is a 20MP APS-C-sized sensor camera that has a massive body with a large grip on its right-hand side that makes for very comfortable handling. It has a classic SLR design with an optical viewfinder with numerous function buttons, and a fully articulated large, touch-sensitive LCD...

In many respects, the Canon EOS 70D is an amazing camera. The flurry of 7 fps, with infinite buffer (or almost) and continuous autofocus, it is a strength indisputable, especially when you consider that the scanned files are 20 megapixels.

  • +

Excellent image quality, Excellent AF (also in Live View), 7 fps burst, Swivel touch screen, Good video mode.

  • -

Placement of some keys improved, One SD slot, No AF-assist lamp.

The Canon 70D ( 70D prices and deals ) ultimately may not have delivered what everyone wanted or expected -- a significant upgrade in still image quality over its predecessor, the 60D -- but instead it ushered in a new technology so unexpected (and useful) that there's no way we could be...

  • +

Groundbreaking Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology delivers full-time continuous autofocusing for both video recording and Live View still shooting and features on-chip phase detect system with nearly two-thirds frame coverage at every single pixel, Extremely smooth and accurate camcorder-like video AF,...

  • -

Image quality hasn't improved much since the 60D, though added resolution helps produce larger prints, Sensor's dynamic range is not improved, still lower than competing models, Very warm results with Auto and Incandescent white balance indoors, Outdoor shots with Auto white balance slightly cool,...

I use this camera for my everyday photography, but mainly give it to my second shooter at weddings. It produces great work. ISO performance is okay, so flash is kind of necessary in low-light. The FPS is a great bonus, especially so my second shooters can capture key moments easier.

  • +

Fast Shutter Speed, Good Image Quality, Large Clear LCD, Quiet, Tilt /Swivel LCD

    Noisy At High ISO

30 July 2015

Love the features on the camera, have not had time to use it much yet. But be sure to read instructions on how to use lens on manual setting. Not a mechanical connection like the older 19-55mm and the 55-250mm.

  • +

touch screen is nice easy to change settings extra battery and sd card

    learning curve on lenses

3 March 2015

I have been using this camera since Dec 2013 . I have been trying hard to get sharp photos from it even in ambient light. I am using Tam SP 28-75 f2.8 lens and images appear too soft when aperture wide open. This happens even with 50mm 1.8. I am worrying of my choice of buying this camera.

  • +

Easy To Use, Fast / Accurate Auto-Focus, Tilt /Swivel LCD

Noisy At High ISO, Poor Image Quality, Poor Image Stabilization, Poor In Low Light

I miss read the advert and picked the wrong lens package- they replaced with no issue. This makes the dod vender first class in my books.

It was quality product at a fair price

This well-built camera following the 7D, with its breakthrough technology sensor, needs bugs fixed before I recommend anyone buying it. The autofocus system does not work as well as older camera models and the microadjustment tool does not help.

  • +

good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Superior build quality, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

  • -

Poor image quality, noisy, poor focusing

12 August 2014

I started with the Canon Rebel T1i and got hooked on photography. The 70D is a huge jump and will take a while for me to learn although the manual is making it easy. This camera has great quality and so many features. Nice grip.

  • +

Super quality photos and so many features

Upgraded from a tried/true 50D, bought this ~3-month old camera used. Have had it myself for ~1.5 months, and still so much to learn. The camera is top-notch, very sturdy and good feel to it. Would recommend this powerful camera. Many detailed reviews out there...

Ensure no issues w/ the AF system (some models have problems getting exact focus?)

28 May 2014

I upgraded from a Canon T3i and couldn't be happier. The touch screen and video was never a factor in my purchasing of this camera but now I find these features indispensable.

  • +

What I like about it. Fast focusing, 19 cross type focus points. Very nice ISO performance. Touch screen is awesome. Sturdy build quality and nice ergonomics. The video quality is excellent combined with STM lenses. Battery perfomance is very good.

  • -

No headphone jack, not a deal breaker.

My new Canon 70D is amazing. I had no idea how much the cameras had improved until my recent purchase. The pictures I have taken are breath taking.
