Currently available for £1695, it’s great to finally see a new full frame body in Canon’s lineup that costs under £2000. For APS-C DSLR users considering the jump up to full frame, it still represents a serious outlay when you consider EF-S lenses can’t be used with the 6D.

  • +

Image quality, ISO performance, Wi-Fi & GPS, AF performance in low-light

There was a time, not so long ago, when the cost of a full-frame DSLR was well beyond the reach of most people who didn't earn their living from photography. Then, within the space of a couple of weeks, Nikon announced the D600, Canon followed close on its heels with the 6D, and the affordable...

  • +

Tough, moisture and dust resistant body., Built-in Wi-Fi and GPS., Great image quality with low noise levels., AF effective in very low light., 4.5fps continuous shooting limited by memory for JPEGs.

  • -

Single SD card slot., Lacks built-in flash., 97 percent viewfinder coverage., Relatively few AF points and only one cross-type., Lacks on-demand viewfnder overlays.

The Canon EOS 6D is a top-notch full-frame camera in a compact body. With a relatively affordable price, enthusiast-friendly features, and spectacular image quality, it's an easy Editors' Choice.

  • +

Compact. Inexpensive for its class. Full-frame sensor. 4.5fps shooting. Superb image quality at high ISOs. Interchangeable focus screens. Integrated GPS and Wi-Fi. 1080p30 video capture. Battery grip available. Supported USB tethered and Wi-Fi remote control.

  • -

Not the fastest camera on the block. Viewfinder only offers 97 percent coverage. Not compatible with EF-S lenses. GPS saps battery life. No flash. Slow focus during video recording. No PC Sync socket.

With the Canon EOS 6D as a counterpoint to Nikon’s D600 , full-frame shooting has become more affordable with only a few differences. Of course, if you already have a stash of Canon (EF only) or Nikon glass, your choice is a bit of a no-brainer (unless you want to change systems).

  • +

Excellent image quality, Great low light/high ISO capabilities, Full-frame shooting at an "affordable" price, Built-in WiFi and, Good performance overall, Sophisticated feature set for the price

  • -

No built-in flash, Single SD/SDHC/SDXC card slot (vs. Nikon D600's dual card slot), Slightly soft images on default settings (depending on lens used)

The EOS 6D doesn't offer the depth of features that its best competitors can, but it combines very good image quality, impressive high-ISO performance and class-leading low-light autofocus ability (with the central AF point) as well as impressive built-in Wi-Fi and GPS features.

  • +

Excellent detail in raw file output across ISO range, Class-leading low light focus sensitivity (from central AF point), Very effective JPEG noise reduction at highest ISO sensitivities, Impressively quiet 'silent' shutter drive mode, Quick Control menu provides easy access to shooting settings,...

  • -

JPEG engine struggles with low-contrast fine detail at low ISO sensitivities, Low density 11 point autofocus array with only one cross-type AF point, Single card slot (SD), Slow burst rate compared to its full frame peers, Cannot configure common live view and movie mode options independently, Video...

While not cheap ($2099 body only; $2699 with the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM kit lens) it represents a new class of camera that we will see more and more of—full-framers at let’s say a more “reasonable” price that will open the joys of higher image quality to more shooters.

In our opinion, Canon has hit the target he set for himself: to create a professional SLR accessible for cost and method of use to user’s enthusiasts. Of course, we are not at the levels of a Mark III and even a Mark II.

  • +

Contrast, Sharpness, Detail and excellent color, Focus on fast-3EV point center cross, DIGIC 5 processor, Wi-Fi and GPS, 1080p video at 30fps good quality.

  • -

Only 11 points of focus therefore not very suitable for sports photography, a single slot for memory cards.

To be honest, I regret not being able to review the Canon 6D for almost two years since it was released. It is a wonderful camera with superb image quality and a good balance of features.

Despite a few quibbles, the 20.2-megapixel Canon EOS 6D lives up to its promise of housing a glorious, full-frame CMOS sensor inside a smaller, lighter, and more affordable digital SLR camera body designed for prosumers, enthusiasts, and even novice photographers.

  • +

Offers the glories of a full-frame sensor in a more affordable, smaller and lighter digital SLR body, Excellent image quality (similar to 5D Mark III) and resolution from 20.2-megapixel, 35.8 x 23.9mm CMOS image sensor, Portable but fairly robust camera build with a comfy handgrip and responsive...

While it's more affordable than previous Canon full-frame cameras, some users might find the $2,000 price tag still to be too high, No pop-up flash, No built-in AF illuminator (though AF system is more sensitive than most), Not as rugged or weatherized as Canon 5D Mark III, No easy-to-use,...

It isn't pocket money, but the EOS 6D nonetheless puts full-frame features within reach of the more ambitious enthusiast photographer. I'd have happily swapped the GPS and Wifi for more autofocus points, but it's nonetheless a great body that captures great colours and very detailed shots.

  • +

Image quality; Full frame sensor; Built in wifi; Built in GPS.

  • -

Limited autofocus points; No built-in flash.

After owning my 6D for more than 18 months, I'm ready to review it, and help people choose their next DSLR. After looking over the few negative reviews here for the 6D I can absolutely recommend throwing out anything below 4 stars, and here's why.

I have had several SLR and DSLR cameras. This is the first full-frame digital camera that I have owned. Blows all others away with options, durability, build quality, etc. Would recommend this to anyone who is looking to get into the professional realm of photography and can spare the extra cash.

This is a full frame body so you get all the benefits of that. There are a few reasonably advanced options, one of the strong ones being WiFi. However, it is getting rapidly outdated as all the cameras now are offering more advanced options and user controls and ways of using the camera.

Overall this Canon 6D is a pleasure for still shots and scenic shots at low light. I can't stress how wonderful low light shots appear to be enhanced in detail by this camera.

  • +

This camera does a lot of things and is a bit of a jack of all trades but a master of none. If there is one thing this camera can do better than most is high detail in low light situations. Night time shots with hardly any lighting?

  • -

Action shots are not this camera's strength at all. Sure you can get some good shots but overall it is not a great action capture camera.

Just got the camera so I am still learning all the features. I believe the photo was taken with ISO 2000! VERY Little noise. I have said this in another post that the most annoying issue I have when purchasing a new camera is the Raw images needs an upgraded version of software.

  • +

Low noise at higher ISO. Full view( my first full frame camera). :).

Only draw back was the LCD does move. I really wanted that feature in my next camera.

After debating between the 7D vs. 6D (with my budget), I went with the 6D and have had no regrets. I was slightly worried about the lower fps and less focus points, but I'm certainly glad I went with the full frame and better performer in lower light.

I purchased the 6D as a second camera to my 1d MK 3. The primary purpose was to use for vacations and general use. I originally had a 60d for this purpose but wasn't satisfied with the camera. I have found that I am now using the 6D for weddings and special events as well as for everyday use.

Awesome camera. If you are upgrading from a cropped sensor, I dont see a need to buy the more expensive 5dm3. The lack of multiple cross type focus points is not at all a problem practically. I thought of buying the 5dm3 and glad that I saved some money there.
