First released in mid 1999, Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM has immediately become a choice for many prosumers and professionals alike. This lens replaced Canon's ancient EF 100-300mm f/5.6L, which was also very liked in the photo community.
At almost a third of the price of the big brother lens, comparisons are a little unfair. This smaller, lighter, slower version is a very nice lens for the money and produces excellent results.

The EF70-200/4L (IS) USM are among Canon's best lenses. If you need a lens that covers this range and can live without an f2.8 aperture, the f4 versions are the ones to get. [Return to Top of Page] Custom Search
The Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L USM Lens is arguably Canon's best value "L" Lens , combining professional grade build and optical qualities . Though solidly built , the 70-200 f/4L is relatively light (25 oz / 705g).

weak performance in bright light
Another member of Canon's f4 zoom lens suite, the EF 70-200mm f/4L USM combines a relatively compact size with light weight when you consider the amount if glass it contains. Consisting of 16 elements in 13 groups, this lens has two ultra-low-dispersion (UD) elements plus a low-dispersion fluorite...
I am using this lens with my Canon 60D to shoot headshot and landscape scenery. It is sharp and the lack of IS is not an issue. The shots uploaded were all done handheld. I Highly recommend this lens! It delivers sharp images. It is a well made lens.
I purchased this lens second hand and must say its perfect! The majority of my shots have been sports shots. And i can't get over how clear and vivid the pics are. I am still learning to use in low light but during a game in the sun this lens is fantastic!!!
In action (sports) photography, AF seems a bit slow, sometimes out of focus when shooting in burst modus (Canon 7D)

slow AF
This is an awesome lens. I bought it to photograph sports and I've found myself using it as a carry lens. The 'L' rated lens has a much more defined contrast and much better image sharpness than my kit lens.

I bought this lens to replace an older version of the same lens and it is much sharper than the older one. I use this to photograph moving subjects and a fast running son on the track. I have had no issues with it so far.

This is my first L, but I got chance to try with other L lenses including 100-400. But so far this is one of the sharper L lenses. Comparing it with Canon 50 f/1.4, Rokinon 85 f/1.4(boken king), Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro(non-IS) and others for sharpness on 40D, nothing can beat my 50mm f/1.4.

My first L lens and is sharp. I had it exchanged once and the second is really good. Focal length is right for walk around to parks and play grounds in sunlight. I already knew its slower aperture and lack of IS and no complains on that. Good bokeh on longer side.

My first copy was not good at f/4, but 1-stopped down, its is razor sharp but I returned for an exchange and got a fantastic(may be it is how it is) lens. No cons for me so far.
Clean mean images with this superbly built lens.

f4 might be a tad slower to someone used to f2.8

This is by far my favorite lens in my arsenal. I'm normally a macro fanatic, so up until using the Canon 70-200L my macro lens was my favorite. The 70-200L is an amazing performer in terms of image quality and focusing speed and accuracy.
