The Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II may be one of the cheapest lenses currently on the market, but its optics belie its lowly price. As befits a classic standard prime lens, it's very sharp when stopped down (especially in the centre), shows minimal chromatic aberration, and has relatively low distortion;...

  • +

Excellent image quality when stopped down, Essentially no lateral chromatic aberration, Extremely cheap

  • -

Extremely cheaply built, Harsh and distracting bokeh due to pentagonal aperture, Vignetting at wide apertures on full frame (which only disappears at F3.5), Inconsistent autofocus in low light (most problematic when using large apertures)

With the exception of its build quality, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II is a fantastic value for your money. But even with sub-standard built quality, it is a highly recommended choice for anyone considering expanding their lens collection beyond kit lenses or interested in acquiring a fixed focal lens for...

This is an excellent little prime for those wanting a good amount of depth and bokeh. The lens captures light excellently. The build quality is ok, though it seems the body is made of plastic. This does keep the weight very minimal overall.

Canon's EF 50mm f/1.8 II is a compact and lightweight basic standard lens which is available for the bargain price of around £80.

was the first "new" lens I got for my Eos 350d / Rebel XT, the lens was bought as a birthday present from my darling wife back in June '09. I still feel like I'm getting to know this piece of glass, but I wanted to write a simple review to share my thoughts before I get the 28mm f/2.8 at...

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens delivers very sharp images as inexpensively as Canon lenses get. Build quality of the 50 f/1.8 is very cheap (as you might expect). This lens feels more like a toy than a piece of optics.

The Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II is a very popular lens and no wonder – for a small amount of money you get an image quality in the frame centre as good as that of the system fixed-focal lenses. It is really tempting and makes many flaws of this lens less significant.

  • +

excellent image quality in the frame centre (apart from the maximum relative aperture),, very good control of chromatic aberration,, moderate distortion,, imperceptible coma in the corners of the APS-C,, slight vignetting on the APS-C,, moderate astigmatism,, good colour rendition and sensible total...

  • -

not especially solid, plastic barrel and mount,, horrible performance of manual focus ring which is devoid of any scale,, loud and unreliable autofocus,, huge vignetting on full frame,, high coma in full frame corners.

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II may be a "cheap" lens but it is undoubtedly a capable one. It shares its characteristics with most other 50mm lenses, reads: it's somewhat soft at f/1.8 but at medium aperture settings it is hard to beat with respect to resolution.

A lens that every photographer should have. A prime lens that gives a very fast and pleasant background. Direksiyon Dersi

I debated about purchasing this lens becuase of the plastic build quality, but I have been amazed at the sharpness and quality of the pictures - particularly for portraits. The super fast F1.8 lets you get that nice, short depth of field & bokeh, without spending $$$$.

  • +

tack sharp, quick focus, small & light

  • -

a bit loud, too much plastic

Love the picture quality when using this lens. the low F-stop is awesome and the unfocused area is blurred as much as I can expect it to. Great lens indeed!

This lens obviously isn't going to have the build quality of a l lens. However, the clarity from this lens is outstanding! The af seems to hunt sometimes but wide open, it is better to use manual focus because the dof is so shallow.

This is my go-to portrait lens for indoors and outdoors. It's never let me down, it's fast enough to get REALLY creamy Bokeh and quick auto focus. If you're looking for a great prime lens to get started with something better than your kit lens, this is your lens!

Fast Glass, Inexpensive, great Depth of field, quick AF

  • -

It feels a bit cheaply built, it's plastic housing doesn't scream quality. Also the lens hood, (ES-62), isn't included, so that's an additional $8-$15.

The Canon EF 50mm is a compact standard lens . It has fixed focal length, high light sensitivity and is very small and light. Weighing in at 130 grams you don’t really notice it at a normal SLR.
