Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM is an excellent long telephoto prime that should be considered by anyone with a limited (relatively speaking) budget. The lens offers very solid image quality and excellent build quality, with good handling of various artifacts, including flare, vignetting and color...

Canon classifies the Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM Lens as a "Super Telephoto" lens. It is super in image and build quality , but is not super in size . The 400 f/5.6 is relatively light in weight but very solidly built . It feels long and narrow in your hand - and feels even lighter than it is.

There's not much more to add that our tests haven't already shown. The lens performs well, perhaps not up to the level that more recent Canon lenses have, but considering the age of its design it still works extremely well.

The EF 400mm f/5.6L was compared to the EF 300mm f/4L with the EF 1.4X and resolution data on a 400mm f/5.6L with the EF 1.4X was determined.

The EF 400mm f/5.6 USM L is one of the oldest lens in the Canon lineup and it's a little bizarre that Canon didn't really bother to upgrade it during all these years. After all there're many users interested in wildlife or sports photography and few amateur can actually afford a behemoth like the EF...

I have owned this lens for 13 years, buying it when I was still shooting film with my Elan 7E (and I'm still waiting for eye-controlled focus to return to Canon's lineup). It has been tack sharp on every camera I have ever used.

This lens is one of the great values in photography. It is super sharp and does a great job of bringing the action to you. While it does not have image stabilization, it is light enough to hand hold and with some practice you can get great shots.

Just purchased this lens and have spent time out birding. I've used it with and without an EF Extender 1.4x, and both hand-held and on a solid tripod. I'm very pleased: without the extender you can (with large hands and steady arms) shoot hand-held for quite a while.

I use this lens at least 3 times a week. 95% of the time hand held and for hours on end with a Canon 5D Mk III or Canon 7D. I hike with this lens quite a bit. I'm 54 years old and have no issues hauling this around all day.

Great Wildlife lens, economical, very sharp, built in lens hood, limiter, lightweight 400

  • -

Lack of IS (obecjtionable), not weather or dust resistant

This lens is light enough to carry comfortably in its case on a belt and/or with the shoulder strap and cheap enough for some of us to buy without a mortgage on the house. This is possible because it does not have IS and it is limited to an aperture of F 5.6, which are its cons.

  • +

Nice Bokeh, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Strong Construction, Good quality case, Lightweight, Rugged, Consistent Output, Integrated lens hood, Easily Interchangeable, Durable

  • -

Poor in Low Light, No Image Stabilization

I am an extremely satisfied user of Canon 400 mm F 5.6 EFL lens. I have used this lens with variopus Canon bodies like Canon EOS 1RS, EOS 1N, EOS 3, EOS 1DS mark II, EOS 5D. I have had wonderful experience with all these bodies with excellent sharpness in the center of the frame.

Outstanding sharpness, well controlled flare characteristics, very little lateral colour, Minimal drop in sharpness with the 1.4 X EF teleconverter.

  • -

lack of USM, I guess that is about it

A good entry level bird/wildlife lens. Takes a bit of practice to get sharp shots handheld.

  • +

Well made. Sharp. Not too heavy for a 400, but not exactly light either. Good value. Works pretty well with the 1.4x extender. Fast autofocus.

  • -

    It could really use IS.

Love this lens!! Have been able to get close to nature. Took a bit to get used to weight but no issues now.
