This lens is the more modest cousin of Canon’s L-series version, which includes both image stabilisation (IS) and ultra-low dispersion (ULD) glass.

Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM is the newest addition to the manufacturer's lineup of macro lenses, and is the second 'Pro' grade (or 'L') classified macro lens besides the EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM.

More than three years after Nikon’s groundbreaking 105mm f/2.8 VR macro , Canon has shot back with a $1,000 (street) fullframer, its first 1:1 close-up lens with image stabilization.

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Lens is an excellent macro lens - and may be Canon's most fun per dollar lens. This is the lens I most frequently recommend for someone starting out in macro photography – at least most frequently recommend until the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM Macro Lens was...

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro is one of two new 100mm macro lenses in Canon's range, the other being the more expensive L-series optic, the CanonEF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, which has the advantage of a new Hybrid IS system.

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro may not have the shiny reputation of an L grade lens but it's a great performer nonetheless. It provides sharp images straight from f/2.8 all the way down to f/16 and neither distortions nor lateral CAs are something to worry about.

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro may be a comparatively old lens by now but it's still capable of playing in the top league - easily. It provides sharp images straight from f/2.8 and it's downright excellent between f/4 and f/8.

I like testing such lenses very much. The test procedures and the results analysis go smoothly and efficiently. I don’t have to think what went wrong and why, describe all slip-ups in detail, find arguments why a lens is overpriced. Here everything went almost perfectly.

  • +

excellent image quality in the frame centre and at the frame edge at all apertures,, negligible chromatic aberration,, distortion at practically zero level,, very low coma,, moderate astigmatism,, silent and relatively quick autofocus,, good build quality.

autofocus could have been more accurate.

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM L IS macro has a comparatively easy play in the APS-C arena. The center to corner resolution is very high up to f/11 and even f/16 is a perfectly usable setting here. Typical for macro lenses distortions are a non-issue. Vignetting is only a slight problem at f/2.8.

The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM L IS macro is a very fine lens and a welcome new option in the market. The resolution is generally very high although the border quality could be a little better at large aperture settings. Typical for macro lenses distortions are a non-issue.

On more than one occasion, my wife and I have considered upgrading to Canon's L-series macro lens. However, every time we pull this out of the bag, we are blown away by the results. Would image stabilization be nice? Of course it would be. Even still, this is a great lens.

I've had this lens for many years now being used on my 60DTHE PROS: The image quality is spectacular. Everything is very crisp above f/3.5. f/2.8 is nice but the DOF is way too shallow and the parts that are in focus are not as crisp.

I really don't have anything bad to say other than it's a very heavy lens, so my wrist gets tired quickly. Other than that, this is a perfect lens. Image quality is outstanding - no fringing or warping, and everything is crystal clear.

If you want to jump into macro photography making compromise in image quality, this lens is the perfect choice, here is why: - Very good image quality, L rated. - Nice build quality. - A joy to use the very large focusing ring. - Pretty good for portrait too.

A bargain, sharp image, build quality, large and nice focusing ring

I had earlier problems with focus, but now my biggest gripe is no lens hood supplied, and Canons tripod ring mountfor this lens, is far dearer than other brands ([*]I`d expect). I have one of these and it works very well, cost me all of $11.00 australian. from Hong Kong of course.
