The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens delivers strong sharpness at wide angles, but image quality really suffers when zoomed inâoverall, it's priced too high for the performance it delivers.

Slight vignetting in the corners of images at the minimum focal length of 24mm
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM was first announced in August of 2005, targeting event/street photographers who require a lens with moderate wide to medium telephoto coveraget range.
Gary Wolstenholme takes a close look at this popular 'L' series lens which covers a 4.4x zoom range, has a constant maximum aperture of f/4 as well as image stabilisation and an ultrasonic focusing motor.

CA levels towards edges throughout the zoom range a little high
Boasting the superb build, mechanical and optical quality found in the Canon L-Series Lenses and a widely used range of focal lengths, the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens is one of the best and most popular Canon general purpose lenses made.
Pro shooters have been asking Canon for an image-stabilized, wide-angle, general-purpose zoom with a constant aperture, weather resistance, and full-frame coverage. (Amateurs have a comparable one in Canon's $420 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens.
EF 24-105mm f/4L IS Strengths: This 4.4x constant aperture L-zoom lens provides close to the perfect focal length for event photography (e.g., weddings, receptions) as well as travel photography with a full frame camera.
A popular professional-level standard zoom covering a 4.4x zoom range with image stabilisation and an ultrasonic motor.

Looking at the pros list you could boldly state we deal here with an excellent instrument. There are two small “buts” though. Firstly, on a small APS-C sensor the maximum angle of view is 59 degrees so as much as a 38 mm lens gave on an analogue camera.

excellent image quality in the frame centre,, very good or good image quality at the frame edge,, slight coma,, low astigmatism,, acceptable distortion,, good work against bright light,, low vignetting,, splendid work of autofocus,, good build quality and solid housing,, lens hood and soft case...

high chromatic aberration at 24 mm.
The Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 USM L IS is surely one of the better standard zoom lenses for full format EOS DSLRs but it's not perfect within this scope nonetheless. The resolution figures are generally very decent except for a pronounced border softness at 70mm @ f/4.
I love the range of this lens, the quality of L series lenses, the 77mm size, and the great image stabilization. I use this product both in the studio as well as sporting events for business as well as for my own children.
My very first premium lens and it exceeded my expectations. The image quality is superb, with a slight distortion open wide (but that can be fixed in post-process anyway). Its build quality is good as well, with a proven capability to withstand bad weather.

Great IQ, stable IS, fast AF, good build quality, versatility

Weight, lens creep
So it is "L" glass and it has a great range and like most of the "L" series is built like a tank. I hike a lot and this guy seems to be great for landscapes and for some outdoor portrait shots as well. I love having f4 through out the zoom range.
I would recommend this camera for those looking for a sharp and versatile wide angle solution and a telephoto solution on a full frame camera.

Plastic, not 2.8 aperture, hood design with filters, loose distance ring
This lens, though not nearly as sharp as my Canon EF 24-70 F2.8 II USM lens, is an excellent not too expensive, not too heavy, but a very good picture quality choice for a go everywhere, shoot anything glass. Image stabilization is a big plus too.
I bought this zoom in 2005. I did not like the 24-70 F2.8 to walk around. To big. The IS is incredible, IQ is oke and I love the range. That 35 mm extra at the end is very nice. I still think this is the most versatile zoom there is. Go on holiday, take this zoom and a EF 50mm F1.2L with you.

Very nice relative small and light walk around lens with perfect range on FF. If you chose one (zoom)lens to take along this is maybe the one. IS is nice.

Nothing special, F4.0 but that why it is small and light. Construction failure, my copy creeps like mad. I put an elastic string around the zoomring, that helps. But a lock would have been nice.
Great value if you are able to buy it with a body (I got mine with a 5D back in the day). A very nice range, you can do a lot with just this lens. f4 is too slow for me now, Image Stabilization helps and is a nice feature. Pretty sharp, but nothing remarkable. Would be a well rounded lens for video.
